Mebane’s infant daughter, Makenna, faces life-threatening health complications stemming from a heart condition and remains hospitalized more than five weeks after her premature birth. She is expected to undergo heart surgery this spring.

Devastating. I was reading about him when they mentioned it on the telecast. I respect him leaving the team to be with his family in a time of need; too frequently professional athletes don't always do that. Also respect the Chargers for giving him that leeway.

Sometimes there just aren't words to express how sad something is. This is such a time.

I’m sure that this does not make it less heartbreaking for the family but the baby had a severe genetic condition called trisomy 13. In addition to severe facial deformities, it causes abnormalities in multiple organs. The rate of miscarriage, prematurity and stillbirth is very high. Median lifespan is less than two weeks and the vast majority will never reach one year of age.
