Armond Armstead signs with Patriots

Ya not sure I would want Bowe either. Pats could draft a guy in the 2nd or 3rd round and

1. He'll be tremendously cheaper
2a. Will actually be 100 percent committed
2b. Did you see that that Pittsburgh game in 2011?

If anything i'd want them to sign someone like Brandon Gibbons. McDaniels is familiar with him. He would cost a lot less. Younger.

No, no...and no! Belichick can't draft WR's...Bethel? Taylor Price? Chad Jackson? Ugh, no thanks. Plus, it would probably take at least 1 or 2 years for them to develop chemistry with Brady. Brady isn't getting any younger...time to get the man a deep threat that can come in day 1 and make a significant impact.

I'm a huge fan of Welker but if the Patriots could sign Bowe and acquire Tavon Austin in the draft I would have to seriously consider that at the expense of Wes Welker. I don't say that lightly as he's one of my favored Patriots of all time.

The issue here is signing people like Bowe and Austin doesn't equate to chemistry with Brady. With Welker we know what we have and I fear the grass may always be greener.

So we should just keep the same crap we have at WR until Brady retires because we're afraid of breaking chemistry?

I'd rather take a chance on a younger, bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic WR for similar money than stick with just "chemistry".

Well that man ain't Dwayne Bowe.

Also you talk about chemistry. Brady had it with Gronk and Hernandez their first year. So that argument doesn't work. I'm also pretty sure McDaniels would have a say in the WR drafted. The guy drafted Thomas and Decker and that's one of the top WR tandems in the league

Pats Fans ***** and moan about the defense.

Front Office make a fairly big free agent signing on defense.

and Pats Fans still find a way to turn this into a discussion about WR's.

gotta love it:rocker:

What do you have against Bowe? Big, physical guy who can go up and get it...exactly what we need...no more rookie WR's. Belichick hasn't been able to draft one since Deion...why should I believe now that he or McDaniels (who personally pushed for Chad Jackson if my memory serves me right) is going to find a WR stud in this class? Let Welks go and put that $ toward a deep threat, whether that be a trade for Fitz, Harvin or signing Bowe or Wallace.

I wouldn't put too much stake in Armstead's "pro day" numbers. He hadn't played football in over 6 months and had missed all of the 2011 season. He wasn't working out in the USC facilities during that period, he wasn't training for the Combine and the pro day like so many top prospects are. I very much doubt that the numbers reflect his true athleticism, or how he would perform now.

Yup.

Arian Foster 40 yard dash: 4.68
BJGE 40 yard dash: 4.60

When you can't train months before the draft/pro day, it's costly. Foster had no time to train, and look what happened.

Armstead's spin move is so fast that players get sucked into the black hole it creates.

......

6 foot 5, 300 pounds? This guy is no Cameron Wake, for sure. That's closer to Ty Warren's build. Makes me wonder how he fits into the Patriots' defense, since 6 sacks in 18 CFL games doesn't really warrant calling him a pass rush specialist. Maybe more a of a Deaderick type.

Sounds good to me. If he ends up replacing the production that we were supposed to get out of Fanene going forward, then that's a worthy signing and basically a free draft pick.

He's a cut 6'5" 300#. No fat on him, and the kid can run. He has a nice arsenal of pass rushing moves, including a terrific spin move and a rip move as well as a bull rush and a speed rush. He can rush from the inside and the outside, and he gets his arms up and blocks passes.

JJ Watt had 5.5 sacks his rookie season. Would you have said he was "more of a Deaderick type" based on that one year, too? Not saying that Armstead is going to be Watt, but he aint remotely close to Deaderick, either.

We really don't know how the kid will do at this level and you always see the very best in the highlight tapes but what you say here is completely agree with.

He the leanest 300lb guy I have ever seen. Just hope he plays with good leverage and body lean.

He will be at least 315-320 pounds by the start of training camp.. That is why we signed him early I bet he will spend the entire offseason in town.

Why do you think he would add that extra weight? I know he is young and his frame could probably allow it but does he really need it? I'd rather have him leaner around that 300 pound range.

It depends how you want to use him. If you want him to be a full time tackle, maybe. Personally, I don't want that. JJ Watt plays around 6'5" 290#, Calais Campbell around 6'8" 300#.

A "cut" 6-6 300 pounder who can go sideline to sideline and has devastating spin moves sounds a lot closer to Richard Seymour than Ty Warren to me.

You make a very good point.

I see him as are big 3-4 DE who shades Wilfork on the side of the Rush OLB/DE and DT in the sub packages where we were forced to use undersized players like Cunningam, Francis and Bequette this year.

I think next year we will have more redefined roles with the development of Jones and Hightower.

But I also see him as a 4-3 LDE opposite Jones. Remember, the Pats pursued 323# Red Bryant last year, who plays 4-3 LDE for Seattle, before signing Jonathan Fanene. I don't think that Armstead is limited to playing outside in 3-4 schemes only. Look at JJ Watt, who played mostly 4-3 DE in college, or Cam Jordan, who played in a 3-4 scheme in college but a 4-3 scheme in the pros. Think about how the Pats were rumored to be looking at using Fanene this year before his injuries led to his being cut. They will be "multiple". If you bulk a guy like Armstead up you may get a very good DT, but you also probably limit his ability to be used in multiple schemes. I'm not sure that's in the team's best interest.

Found this from the National Football Post written in July 2011 when he was still under the radar a bit and had more questions about his abilities...

DL Armond Armstead: No. 94 (6-4, 292)
A tall, thickly put together defensive lineman with a long set of arms and natural girth through his frame.

Third player listed...

Oddly enough, I live in Toronto but don't follow the CFL. I remember the city going crazy when Toronto won the Greg Cup though.

Anyways, hopefully this will be a solid addition.
