Appreciation for the defense

If post season had counted Zak Kuhr deserved assistant coach of the year over Josh. Considering how he got the job, he might have deserved it in regular season as well.

I think in today's NFL the BB staple of bend and don't break defense by keeping it in front of you and rally to the ball is not as effective unless you can get home with a 4-man rush.

Blitzing the crap out of MOST QB's these days is the way to win, Pressure the QB is #1, great coverage #2. They don't have the depth of pass rushing talent, but Kuhr figured out how to time blitzes to get the pressure needed.
Clueless McDaniels who can't adjust should give that accomplishment back he doesn't deserve it.

My brother and I were so frustrated watching the game and Josh's play calling.
I saw some analyst talking this AM that reviewed film and basically said Josh tried a lot of things nothing worked because WR's were covered and pressure was too relentless or Drake missed a couple open guys.

I don't know if I'll ever watch tape of this to determine if there is any truth to it but that doesn't change some obvious criticism's even if some of that is true.

Using Trey to run up the middle, ever when Rham was maximizing those yards? The 1 time Trey went to the edge 8 yards.

No misdirection and only 1 moving pocket which was the dumb PA, don't block the end and hope TE is open play.

Not having Blitz adjustments outside of a swing pass to rb. The first blitz Pop saw the DB blitzing right in front of him and instead of cutting his route short as a hot read he still ran a deep route. Blitz adjustment 101 and either Pop is really bad at it or Josh didn't teach it right.

Not 1 screen play? I know Seattle plays screens well but not a single screen to try when nothing is working.

It's like Josh wanted to make sure he remained an OC not have to turn down a HC job in a couple years so he decided a high profile flame out would do the trick. It was that embarrassing.

McDaniels si overrated I didn't want for Drak Maye: no innovation whatsoever.

Defense was fantastic but they are still an edge guy and a LB or 2 away from being deadly. A LB/S hybrid would be insane as well.

I suspect that we could plan to
1) re-sign Chaisson (our only high-priced UFA.
2) get Landry healthy (he's staying in any case.
3) draft an EDGE rusher in the 1st and or 2nd.
4) add another 2nd level LB or LB hybrid in free agency.
5) Re-sign RFA Gibbens (and expect to Elliss to continue to produce.
6) Continue to have Tavai as a STer and ILB backup.

It should NOT be difficult to upgrade 2-3 of the following now on the roster
Mapu
Muma
Swinson
Ponder
=======
Chaisson, draftee, Landry, Jennings, Ponder
Spillane, Elliss, Gibbens, Tavai, fa hybrid

I don't think that LB crew gets it done. I really don't. Gibbons got lost on a lot of RB cutbacks etc as well. They got burned on that TE TD in the SB and it's an achilles heel of this defense. Out of the LBs I would really keep it would only be Spillane. Thats about it. If you can't upgrade the other spots then you keep what you have I guess. Devin Loyd is a FA and only 27. He would immediately lock down the LB room and bump Spillane down a notch.

It's gonna be interesting where they go in FA then the draft. A couple of OT's are first round graded, I think the line is the most important draft issue they have.

Obviously we found out in the post-season that the development of the offense is some way behind where a lot of thought it had gotten to during the regular season.

However, I want to take a moment to acknowledge what we saw on the other side of the ball.

Now I know there are better NFL QBs and offenses than Darnold and co, but all the talk coming into this game was about JSN - and how he was suddenly ‘the best receiver in the game’ after one good year.

…and then our defense rendered him totally anonymous tonight, even before the concussion. Shaheed also barely made a play all night.

That isn’t just down to Gonzo. That’s to the credit of the entire defense, our stand-in rookie playcaller, and T Williams’s hard work before he got sick.

So yeah, we’re behind on offense but tonight we also learned how far ahead this defense is in its own redevelopment. The improvement in a year is unreal.

If we can do it on that side of the ball in one offseason, we can certainly do it on O this year too.

I agree. The defense when healthy is a championship level defense, but they need more depth and more playmakers.

The offense needs to continue building the OL and also needs to add more weapons.

Defense was amazing throughout the postseason.

2 years in a row a dominate defense won the Super Bowl by putting tons of pressure on the QB and covering well.

Bodes well for Pats with their best guys still in the prime: Williams, Gonzalez and now Woodson. Like to put Barmore in there but honestly a bit underwhelmed by his year. Had flashes of dominance but disappeared too often. Spillane and Davis had good years as well. Marcus was solid though he does tend to be the guy that gets beat the most.

Concerned a bit for Landry, going to be 30 and couldn't stay on the field. Can't cut him until after next year, hope he can bounce back but I would be planning as if he's not. He got hurt almost 4 months before SB, maybe he needs some minor surgery?

Overall, the defense is why I'm already excited for next year, they are building a top defense. Less than a month to free agency! I love the fact being in SB makes the wait for off season moves so much less.

Gonzo made himself some serious money tonight.

Proud of the D. Did everything they could. That slow-mo after Drakes fumble showing the D reacting to it.. Brutal

Already excited for next year.. This D can get better
See you soon NE...
