It keeps comes up not because of a lack of misunderstanding of the rule but the back judge's observation and applicability of the rule to what happened.
This pic shows he has control, his knee is down, and is down by contact.
The "assumption" the ref makes is he lost control when he hit the ground which at that point would have been a live ball. I get that.
It's speculative to say the ball dislodged when Cooks hit the ground since he was tackled. Does that mean defenders can rip the ball out when defenders are down by contact? Why wasn't this ruled a contested catch?
That is my problem with the call.
