The Pats use the terminology "Mike" for the SILB; that can be shortened to MILB or MLB.
The WILB seldom gets two guys; he can succeed as well, by slipping blocks. Tedy set NCAA sack records by slipping blocks, not overpowering guys. He is much better as a WILB,where his talent for slipping blocks can more often be utilized.
I agree; in a 5-2 or 3-4 Defense the Sam can be termed the Mike; the Sam then becomes the SOLB. It's all games with terminology.
Tedy was a DE in college. Even a Will has to take on Guards in a 3-4. The Guards are uncovered unlike in a 4-3 when the LB's have a 1 tech and a 3 tech in front of them. The Mike in a 4-3 is very likely to run free.
