Also, I noticed yesterday that AR, DB and BR all have labels with their name and team, but TFB doesn't!

The only reason I can think of is the text about the TFB story!

They ain't gotta tell us that's Tom Brady for the New England Patriots, everybody already knows. TFB needs no introduction.

I bought the iPad version of this edition; pretty good (has all four covers) with a not great but still good story on Brady hanging in there at Michigan. (Of course. TFB himself didn't talk to SI for the story). This bit caught my eye:

A few years ago Tom Brady Sr. walked into his son's Boston condo and was shocked. "His foot's been hanging from the ceiling and he's got a [soft] cast on his leg," he recalls. When his son removed the cast Tom Sr. saw, "blood from groin to his ankle." Brady had never told his parents he was hurt. He never does. Tom senior figured the injury meant they could not go out to dinner that night. But of course they went, and of course Brady played that week.

Yikes.

SI cover is not a jinx. You're getting confused with the Madden cover.
Bruschi appeared on the cover of SI and the Pats won the superbowl that year.
