Day 19, second Patriots practice - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

Day 19, second Patriots practice
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
August 17, 2009 05:33 PM

FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots concluded their afternoon practice (3:45-5:30) and were once again in full pads. Both practices today were in full pads in the hot, humid conditions.

This was the 26th overall practice since training camp began July 30, a total which includes the Wednesday walkthrough before the preseason opener. The return of CB Shawn Springs was notable. Springs had been out since the eighth practice of camp.

A few observations:

1) Joey Galloway responding … until a drop. Veteran receiver Joey Galloway was hard on himself for his performance in the preseason opener (0 catches, 2 passes thrown in his direction), and he seems to be practicing with a purpose the last two days. He hasn’t missed a practice – forgoing his past schedule of practicing once on double-session days – and has made some tough catches. The positive momentum was stunted at the end of practice, in 11 on 11 work, when Galloway couldn’t gather in a touchdown down the left side from Tom Brady (Jamar Love in coverage). The pass went off his hands.

No letting up: Patriots in pads again… and Springs says, “Hello”
Posted by Ian Rapoport at 5:32 pm

The Patriots are at it again in the afternoon, and (surprise!) coach Bill Belichick is still serious about football. No letting up for this group…

Let’s see what’s going on at practice:
– Even with a brutal sun beating down and the heat not going anywhere, New England still went out in full pads. One more two-a-day after this…
– CB Shawn Springs returned to practice after being gone since… Forever. While he was stretching, Belichick walked by, shook his hand, and appeared to be introducing himself and laugh. Good times…

Noteworthy plays/observations
* In a one-on-one pass coverage drill, TE David Thomas made a tremendous move to get open against LB Adalius Thomas. Thomas ran about 15 yards into the end zone, with LB Adalius Thomas trailing him by a step. David Thomas head-faked right, then left, before deciding to go right. The linebacker bought what the tight end was selling, and David Thomas made the reception for the score. The juke move worked so well because on their previous encounter, Thomas simply faked left before going right and the other Thomas had him covered perfectly.
* LB Jerod Mayo was unstoppable in the one-on-one pass-rush drill versus the running backs. He bulled his way into the backfield each time his number was called.

Thursday afternoon notes

By Paul Perillo, Patriots Football Weekly

Full pads practices continued in Foxborough despite oppressive temperatures that created less-than-ideal conditions. The passing game was featured throughout the afternoon with both offense and defense finding some success.

...

Who’s hot: Joey Galloway – The veteran continued his recent upswing with a strong afternoon of work. He appeared to be Brady’s target throughout and he caught most everything in his direction, showcasing his top end speed. He did drop a would-be touchdown later during a two-minute drill.

Who’s not: No one – With temps soaring into the 90s for the second straight day, everyone who suited up for practice made it through unscathed – no small feat after what transpired Sunday.

Play of the day: Brady and Galloway hooked up a number of times but one in particular was special. Galloway took off on a go route down the seam and Brady uncorked a bomb that the veteran caught in stride behind Jamar Love.
