I thought I'd give this one a whack. My 5:

1. Win the turnover battle. Both teams are oppotunistic. The Saints lead the NFL in turnovers with 29, the Pats are 3rd with 22. Over the past 5 games the Pats lead the NFL with 16 turnovers. The Pats are 2nd in turnover differential at +12, the Saints 4th at +10. The Saints have produced a whopping 566 yards on 20 INT returns, and have scored 7 TDs directly on turnovers (5 INTs and 2 fumbles); the Pats, only 1, but that came last week. Whichever team wins this battle will have a decided edge. On offense, the Pats need to avoid costly mistakes and big negative plays. They can't kill drives with costly turnovers, and if they do turn the ball over they have to stop the Saints from making the big gain and force the Saints offense to work for points. On defense, they have to stay aggressive and make plays; and the Pats need to turn those opportunities into points. The good news for the Pats is that the Saints offense has been prone to turnovers.

2. Control the TOP. The Pats currently rank 1st in TOP at 34:43, the Saints 7th at 32:21. The Pats need to keep the Saints offense off the field and limit their opportunities. The Saint's defense is 7th in the league in limiting 3rd down conversions, at 34.5%. The Pats offense is 6th in converting 3rd downs, at 45.7%. How the Pats do to convert on 3rd (and 4th) down and keep drives alive will be important. Being able to run the ball effectively will also be important. If the Pats outrush the Saints, I think the Pats win.

3. Red Zone Execution. This is perhaps the biggest key, on both sides of the ball. The Saints defense gives up yards and points, but makes big plays and is 5th in red zone defense. The Pat's offense ranked 25th in red zone efficiency going into the Jets game. Conversely, the Pats defense rank 2nd in PPG but 28th in red zone defense.

4. Stop the Run. The Saints have too many weapons to shut down. But they've been running for over 150 yards per game. That's too much, in addition to Drew Brees. The Pats need to slow the Saints running attack and make them beat us in the air. Then they become more one-dimensional. If the Saints can run at will, then it will be a long day for the Pats defense. The Pats slowed NY's league-leading rushing attack last week, so they can do it.

5. Play for 60 minutes. We have to avoid mental lapses. We have to avoid special teams breakdowns. And above all we have to come out on fire in the 2nd half and play our guts out on both sides of the ball. No 3rd quarter absences if we want to win this game. Like the Colts, the Saints are a team that we could easily beat for 3 quarters and lose the game.

If the Pats do win the game, I think the person who may have had the most to do with it outside of the players on the field will be Peyton Manning. Our biggest advantage over the Saints is that we've already been battle tested (and scarred) against a top offense. They've never faced an offense like ours.

Dad-gum it, you are early!

I agree with your keys.. have been thinking about this and will add my thoughts later on.

Had to beat you to the punch this time.

I look forward to your thoughts. Always instructive.

The difference is they were stopping it with their base 3-4. We're likely to be playing a 3-2-6 alignment most of the game. They are going to need a big game out of the three big safeties.

NO averages roughly 37 points. Pats give up just under 17. Split it and if the Pats give up 27 they win. The Saints offense is more scary than the Colts because they can also run the ball. The Saints defense isn't nearly as good as the Colts. We are going to score on them.

Great post!

IMO turnover battle and TOP will be key. I don't see the Pats D containing this offense. As compared to Indy. Passing O is similar, but as you point out Mayo, NO runs the ball very well. May see a lot of base 5-6

Agreed. There's a big difference between shutting down the Jets' running game and daring Sanchez to try and beat you, and shutting down the Saints' running game and daring Brees to try and beat you.

If we run a 3-2-6 I wouldn't be surprised to see Wilfork at DE along with Warren and Pryor/Brace in the middle. It will be hard to run on that kind of a massive line. They probably won't get a huge amount of pass rush penetration, but they can probably push the pocket back and collapse it.

Don't underestimate the NO defense. They are different than the Colts - a big play defense more than a shutdown defense. NO gives up 4.7 PPG more than Indy. But the NO defense also directly scores 4.2 PPG more than Indy.

That said, we put up 34 on Indy and should have had much more. I have a hard time not seeing us scoring in the 30's on New Orleans. So if we hold them in the 20's I think we win.

I've never seen a Saints fan ever on this message board, and probably wont see them for another 4 years after this week...

iM SORRY BUT THE COLTS DID'NT HAVE THE CROWD THAT WE WILL HAVE IN THE DOME ON MNF (WE ARENT QUIET), NOR DO THEY HAVE AS MANY WEAPONS WE HAVE...WE HAVE 3 LEGIT RBS THAT CAN BREAK 1 ANY TIME...WE HAVE WAYYY MORE WRS THAN THE COLTS...YOU WILL FACE A WAYYYY BETTER SECONDARY THAN THE COLTS..DARREN SHARPER WILL BE BACK THERE LURKING AND YOU ALSO GET TO BE THE 1ST TEAM TO SEE OUR NEW ADDITION FORMER RAVENS CB CHRIS MCALLISTER THAT WE SIGNED LAST WEEK AND WE ALSO RESIGNED MIKE MCKENZIE...2 SOLID VETS...SO DONT COMPARE US TO THE COLTS

Nice to see a post with you with some words in it.

If you've ever played in Indy, the Colts fans make plenty of noise. I don't think that will be a factor.

I've already admitted you have more offensive weapons than Indy, which is part of why I think limiting your running attack is key. You don't have a better passing attack than Indy, and if we can reduce the game to a passing contest (as opposed to a pissing contest, which you seem to favor), I think we win.

I'd be thrilled to see Mike McKenzie and Chris McAllister this week. Tom Brady would be even more thrilled, I suspect. Darren Sharper has had a great year as a centerfielder, but NO hasn't faced a QB in Brady's class, whereas the Pats have clearly faced one in Brees' class 2 weeks ago in Indy.

What about Merriweather against the Bucs?

Pherein is welcome anytime he wants to post, as far as I'm concerned. As is any intelligent fan from any team who wants to actually talk football instead of troll.

Someone hit a nerve!

i think you guys are underestimating our defense....if u dont think our d-coordinator isnt trying to plan a way to put brady into a new orleans hospital ...than you may be talking about the wrong team

How old are you? like 12?

We faced him twice a year when he was with the Bills and he never won a game and put up 52 points on him when he was with the Redskins. So ya we know him.

Wow a saints fan sighting on this board, welcome to the discussion.

PS Your caps lock key is stuck might want to get that looked at.

i think you guys are underestimating our defense....if u dont think our d-coordinator greg williams isnt trying to plan a way to put brady into a new orleans hospital ...than you may be talking about the wrong team....you will see a better secondary and linebacking core than u saw with the colts...vilma is playing at a high level and our line is earning their pay...we are also getting back our big Dt from Usc Sedrick Ellis back this week..so he will push your interior line back and you will have to get help...trust me !

Yeah, god knows we have a poor record against Greg Williams defenses.. oh wait. The Saints LB corp other than Vilma suck, the secondary is very opportunistic but can be passed on and they haven't faced a QB on Brady's level this year, the Dline there is very good but not great at getting pressure rushing 4. Welker is going to have a field day against your defense.

1. Play the Saints WRs man-to-man, but give help over the top on Colston with Meriweather. Put Wilhite and Butler on Henderson, Meachem or whoever else NO rolls out (they are deep at WR) and put the physical Bodden on the huge Colston. Put McGowan on Shockey. I think they can lock down these receivers long enough as long as the Pats can...

2. ...Get pressure on Brees with exotic blitzes. Bring Banta-Cain off the edge on either side, bring Mayo or Guyton up the gut. Have Adalius come from either side. Fake blitz, then drop into short zones for the crossing routes. I don't think the Pats can bring consistent pressure with the base 4-man rush, so they need to mix things up. Do things Brees hasn't seen on film.

3. Hold strong against the run. Thomas and Bell are a great one-two punch in that offense. It will be up to Wilfork, Warren and the ILBs to carry the lions-share of run D (I suspect the Pats will be in various nickels that keep Wright and other DLs off the field for many snaps). I hope Warren is fully recovered because he'll be needed. I have total faith in the beast that is Wilfork (extend him quickly, BB).

4. Keep the Saints D off balance with under-center snaps with runs and play-action. Do not go heavy shotgun as the Saints can pass-rush with the best of them.

That's it...just 4. I think the Pats' offense, when it plays balanced football like it did vs. Atlanta, Baltimore and the 1st half vs. Indy, can score on anyone so there's not much to add there. The key is not playing scared on D, not backing down against that offense. Don't play off the receivers out of fear. Make Brees be perfect on his throws. As we've seen with Brady, pressure on the QB makes a world of difference so the Pats need to get some heat on Brees.

Regards,
Chris

Really? I thought Greg Williams was planning ways to give us the game.

Of course he's planning ways to beat us. Who wouldn't? You don't think we aren't planning some ways to get a few shots on Brees. I'd like to see Pat Chung hit him the way he hit Chad Henne a few weeks ago.

I think I've given plenty of credit to the NO defense in recent threads. But the fact is, you've given up 27 points to Detroit (9 above their season average), 27 points to the Giants (slightly above their average), 34 points to Miami (10 above their season average), 27 to Atlanta (slightly above their season average), 20 to Carolina (slightly above their season's average) and 23 to the Rams (12 above their season average). So I think there's a pretty decent chance the Pats score 30+ on you next week, for a team that's averaging 29 PPG coming in.
