What's funny is that I argued against LVE for quite some time, and then I came around on his trajectory (which I've mentioned elsewhere in this thread). Essentially, he's a bit of a late bloomer, but the progress he showed over the course of the season leads me to believe that he's a few technique issues away from becoming a superstar at LB. If he fulfills his promise, he's a rare, rare player. Even if he doesn't, though, he could still be useful in a rotation. Is that kind of gamble worth a 1st? Normally, I would say no, but we have two 1sts, and we have a clear need to build a linebacking corp for the future.
Edmunds will be gone top 12 most likely. Too much required in a trade up. I absolutely loved watching Smith at Georgia, but I'm not sure he would be protected enough in our scheme. We seem to like bigger, more physical players. So that leaves 1) Evans, who is not that big, either, but has the skills to take on blockers but also some questions about durability; 2) LVE, who needs technique work and time to develop, but has the potential for the most complete game at LB of anyone in the draft; and 3) Jefferson, who faces rumors about his commitment to the game, but is a scintillating talent whose closing speed is unparalleled when he has a free lane.
My guess is that we'll pass on all of them in the 1st, because we wouldn't project any of them to be instant starters. We'll probably trade down and take someone like Kalambayi in the 4th or 5th, and be happy enough with the end results. But what do I know? The Patriots are inscrutable.
