Alright, so this thread isn't unveiling anything anything we didn't already know but may put some new perspective on things.

Obiouvsly the NFL has changed a lot since 2002..........with more emphasis on defense pass interferece & illegal contact.......not to mention the chnages to the 'roughing the passer" penalties.

Here's a stat that may brign it to life a little more...........

In 2002, Tom Brady's first full season as a starter, he LED THE LEAGUE with 28 TD passes.

In 2016, Tom Brady missed four games and still threw for 28 TD passes (on a team that had a running back gobble up another 17 TDs!!)

Another fun fact is that 28 TD passes matches Drew Bledsoe's single season high.

18 TDs

Him leading the league in TDs in 2002 is burned into my brain because I was busy using it in my forum-warrioring that Brady wasn't just a lucky backup. This was back in the day when you'd get looked at like you had ****s for eyes if you dared suggest Brady was even close to Manning's level.

Wasn't 2002 the same year Peyton got whipped 41-0 by the JETS in the WC round?

Yeah but [reasons]

It wasn't until 2007 that most people finally accepted that the big mean 6th round draft pick might be as good as the poor-downtrodden #1 overall draft pick with a football pedigree that was a mile long and who was the Joffrey Baratheon of Tenn. Poor Peyton. Tom got all the breaks, that's why everyone hates him.

I still remember Pete Sheppard being razzed on the radio all the time those first couple of years for his absolute insistence from Day One that Brady was the real thing.

Actually, I thought Manning's hype was manufactured at that point. I remember him doing commercials during his rookie season when he was throwing more INTs than TDs. But the NFL marketing machine was pushing him as the next savior of the league, to finally fill the vacuum left by Montana and then Marino/Elway.

That's why I've always had some hate for the Andrew Lucks and Sidney Crosbys that get crowned before they do ****.

TFB had to earn it. But how dare he mess up that perfect narrative the NFL had set up? Didn't he know that Warner and Manning were supposed to reign as kings for the next decade? (with some interruptions by league darlings in New Jersey and Pittsburgh)

Anyway, rant off...

Lmao

Remember when Donald Hayes and Cam Cleeland were supposed be two solid targets for Brady that season? P.U.!

Actually when you look back that schedule turned out absolutely brutal. Could be wrong but I don't think the Pats played more than 4 losing teams all year....The AFC East was quite good that year too.

IIRC defense dominated that season league wide and QB play was kind of down across the league...as we know the Pats defense was not exactly championship caliber....

It was three losing teams. The 6-10 Vikings, the 3-13 Lions and the 4-12 Bears. There were a bunch of 8-8 teams (Bills x2, Chargers and Chiefs), another bunch of 9-7 teams (Jets x2, Dolphins x2, Broncos), the 10-5-1 Steelers, the 11-5 Raiders and Titans and the 12-4 Packers.

So yeah 3 teams. That's unbelievable. I don't think the Pats have seen a schedule like that since. I'm not even sure any other team has.

28 is pretty freaking good against a schedule like that...

Tom also through 14 picks that year, compared to just 2 this year.

I remember when Peyton first came out I was thinking "jeez, this kid needs to live up to Drew Bledsoe before getting all this adulation" back in like 1998.. God I was an idiot.

Heh, well, it's the same basic idea though. No one could actually know what he'd become, but they "crowned his ass" anyway. So, they got Peyton Manning right, but looks like they missed the boat on Andrew Luck, who is good, but not elite.
