2027 Watch List

James Foster is first round high on Miami DL Justin Scott. Bain & Mesidor last year moves inside to Scott and Mohten this year.

Evan Johnson, CB, BYU
6-0, 185

82.6 coverage grade in 2025, following a 78.1 in 2024. More impressivly, he had 5 INTs and 7 PBUs, exactly the same as Leonard Moore.

I love how he doesn't fall for the false step from the WR here and locks him down in man

Only Moore and some guy from E Carolina had a better man coverage grade than Johnson.

BYU have some interesting potantially draftable players next year. Johnson, the RB LJ Martin, safety Faletau Satuala and linebacker Isaiah Glasker.

Completion percentage allowed in man coverage 2025

Kelley Jones, Mississippi State - 14.3%
Demello Jones, Georgia - 23.1%
Evan Johnson, BYU - 25%
OJ Frederique, Miami - 25%
Jamari Sharpe, Indiana - 28.6%
Brice Pollock, Texas Tech - 28.6%
Dezz Ricks, TAMU - 32%
Smith Snowden, Michigan (formerly Utah) - 32.3%
Jyaire Hill, Michigan - 40%
PJ Woodland, LSU - 40%
Eli Bowen, Oklahoma - 40%
Christian Gray, Notre Dame - 40.9%
Zach Lutmer, Iowa - 41.2%
DJ McKinney, Notre Dame (formerly Colorado) - 43.8%
Leonard Moore, ND - 45.2%

And because I like a good run defender at CB, the top 5 run defense grades among the group above:

Demello Jones - 82
Brice Pollock - 79.1
Zach Lutmer - 78.6
Jyaire Hill - 75.6
PJ Woodland - 74.9

So Demello Jones or Brice Pollock or bust?

It's just coincidence that Demello Jones did so well. I didn't know what the result would be in advance. In fact, this post was inspired by Evan Johnson.

Just an addendum to the above.

Chris Peal (Syracuse) had the lowest* y/rec in man coverage at 7.4. The only other leading corner with less than 10 yards per reception is Ohio State's Jermain Matthews. Peal is also one of the best run defenders but had a 52% completion percentage allowed. They just don't go for many yards.

* As with all these lists, I'm including corners I've heard of only. There are many more that qualify but are they draftable?

A point to remember. No-one expected Mansoor Delane, coming off a bad year at VT, to be the number one corner at this point last year.
