2025 Draft: WRs

@imahobgoblin
follow along with me please.

I have bolded where I asked my question and asked for answers/opinions. The question was basically will stride length counteract a slower MPH. I then compared their speed at 10yd increments, again saying it did not make sense in my head.

I was comparing speed and then you proceeded to explain that they are an X and a Z and its 2 different positions with different skillsets and then went into detail about those skillsets. You are correct they require different skills and that a balanced team needs both. That was not relevant to my initial question.

I see that why you thought I was comparing as WRs and not just people that ran a 40. I used them because as examples to illustrate my confusion with stride length and MPH. I thought it was clear that I was only comparing speed, that is my bad for ASSuming. Then I tried to make it clearer since I did not make it clear enough initially.

Yes what you wrote was educational and true, but not relevant to my question. I do like MPH because a 40 time out of a track stance is ridiculous for WRs. Yep I did compare them, but when you say stats I ASSumed you meant production and that is not where I went at all and felt you made an illogical leap. In the initial grid it was strictly speed numbers.

I do see why you said I was comparing them because I was, but only speed and I ASSumed that was clear by my asking a question about speed and stride length in the 40.

You got me, I did put their names together as a comparison. Again, I ASSumed when you said stats that you meant production and that was not what I was going for. You also thought you would be big and bad by calling me a snowflake. When I was trying to explain my point about our confusion. Bringing up being a female was that your attempt at playing female victim to the big bad man or put me in my place. It actually was pretty funny when you did that.

Just FYI, my time in the Air Force gave me pretty thick skin so I am OK being criticized by men and women.

I really don't feel like any of this was criticism as much as you explaining something that was not relevant to anything I initially wrote. I thought my question was clear, so the fact that we each wasted time and energy into this was aggravating and I do know I could have just said thanks and moved on, but I am still trying to figure out stride length and MPH and the impact on 40 time.

Another example is that 6-4 Donte Thronton had a 4.3 40 yd and Golden had a 4.29, but at no time did Golden have a faster MPH nor does he have a longer stride. I know they are different positions within the WR group.

I am sorry I fooled you and the rest of the forum; I will contain my trickiness. Do not underestimate my sneakiness. OK I will accept that I am a snowflake . As far as using the F bomb, that is in my Everday vocab. It does not add any legitimacy to my posts nor does it make me feel macho/big and bad.

I don't care. I am not reading this book.

I like Bech a lot. He is a strong and beefy presence. I have to learn more about McVay's power slot where Puka and Kupp play and see how it fits with Josh's schemes. How does it differ from regular slot? What do the Z and X do when someone in in the power slot? Stuff like that. I called plays for the first time last year in a local league, and all this is interesting.
That is awesome, have fun in the play design and scheming journey. Tons of fun.

Great question!

Obviously the slot is the guy taking the short inside routes.

X is the outside deep route runner.

Z is also outside but usually lined up on the same side as the TE.

This site actually identifies each prospect for you.

Most of the top WRs are listed as X but guys like Restrepo and Noel are listed as slot. The rest just say multirole.

The top 5 according to nfl combine/next generation or whatever. But as you can see Tet and Egbuka didn't participate.

When you look at Athleticism scores my boys Teslaa and Neyor showed out. I've never heard of Sam Brown?

The term Big/Power slot refers to the size of the player in lined up in the slot at the time. A big/Power slot does not change the X and Z per playcall. A big slot can provide some advantages in the run game because they are typically better blockers than smaller guys. The big slot Can also create mismatches in the passing game because most slot corners are smaller.

As far as a fit in Josh McDs scheme, Jakobi Meyers was a big slot. He lined up in the slot around 50% of his snaps. Most OCs have every WR in the slot at some point to try and create mismatches. Tee Higgins has lined up in the slot between 15%-20% of his snaps every year in the league.

With the Raiders Jakobi plays more on the outside but still lines up in the slot around 30% of the time.

I'll try to give you a real answer. The NFL's dirty little secret is that they manually start the timer. The electronic time might be a laser finish, but they're still started by the guy with the stopwatch. You have to take even official forty times at +/- .05 or so IMO.

It's a lot more useful to look at GPS information throughout the season Andy their high school track and field numbers where available. Of course, you can also just rely on the good old eye test. Someone who plays fast is more likely to succeed than someone who tests fast.

I DO love numbers, though.

That is the conclusion I was under as well about the manual clock start and electric laser finish. That is the reason that Golden has a better time than Thornton.

It's also why the sun will cam doesn't always quite line up with the reported speed. Worthy, Golden, and Bond were all about a step apart. Regardless of any synchronization discrepancies, there's no way that .18 seconds is the difference of two strides.

With two sprints you get a little bit of mitigation for run to run variance, but it's still not an exact science. Take into consideration that some of them have sprinters starts and others don't, and it's all over the map as a predictive measure for their in-game speed. Obviously, a wide receiver doesn't want to clock a 4.8, but as long as they clear a certain bar, I'm not too concerned.

That's why I prefer to look at tiers of athleticism instead of the absolute number, even though I really really enjoy RAS and other similar projects.

I would love to see the WRs line up as a Z, so off the LOS and have a laser point lined up Infront of them and the electronic timer starts as the WR crosses it and the finish is like it is now. I know that we won't be able to compare this guy to a guy 10 years ago, but this current set up is actual trash.

I will say Golden didn't show very good blocking ability from what I saw, but he's on the smaller side for an X receiver. I'm just down on these WRs as a group, so any time I get excited about 1 I have to pinch myself lol These are still mid level depth pieces and the chance that ANY of them become our WR1 are near impossible!

I am all about the eye test, but I am also analytical, so the testing numbers do not really help guide my decisions. I like taking the numbers and then creating various pivot tables so I can look back and see if there was anything predictive in the testing.

My eyes are the true test. They have led to a ton of misses and hits though, so I am trying to figure out a more accurate system

I think Jayden Higgins is a future star WR, he can line up all over the field and would be a silly hard matchup out of the slot.

I do like Noel, but I have a draft pick reserved for this guy as a slot

to go with this guy

Your love for Jayden Higgins is becoming more tiresome than @bakes781 hate for Will Campbell

You'd never catch me going on and on about the same player <cough> LeQuint Allen, Bradyn Swinson <cough>

For me it depends on the day or which pair of glasses I stumbled on lol

Noel or Higgins? I want them both just like I want Membou and Stewart.

I think they are the best two WR additions. The trick is to find the best alternatives should we miss out on them.

Yeah exactly...

I think Higgins and Harris are pretty similar. Where as the 2 Jalins Noel and Lane are similar.
