DRAFT 2024 3rd Round Pick - OT Caeden Wallace

I’m thinking Strange is the real question mark, not Sow. But I could be wrong on that.
If Sow is our starting LG to start the season, and the staff likes him over Strange, Strange will be traded.

Technically for first rounders it’s a 4-year contract with a team option for a 5th year. Unless Strange plays a lot better this coming season I don’t see them picking up that 5th year option next spring.
It's also true that the 5th year option is really only for Pro Bowl players. So I agree he wouldn't have it exercised. This may be the calculation with Robinson. Average option for an OL (they don't break it down into guard and tackle) is $14m+.

Effectively, almost all the guards who don't make the Pro Bowl in the NFL become free agents because their positional salary is averaged in with all the LTs. It's a crazy way to do it, but that's the NFL.

If you drafted a guard and they are simply mediocre, it's not even worth keeping them. You have to keep drafting guards.

5th year option. If the player is worth it, the teams always choose the option. Why wouldn't you?
The player is in his 4th year on a team friendly rookie contract, which may or may not be fine.

The option will cost the team $22M GUARANTEED for the 5th year. So, perhaps, sometimes it is right not to choose the option.

Your link says $13m.

Strange won't even be healthy by then.
If Strange is on the PUP list, the team will have time to evaluate Sow before deciding on whether he is the permanent starter at LG. Strange could compete the season on the squad replacing Mafi or he could be traded.

If Strange can't regain his LG spot, no one will trade for him. It will mean there is damage on that patella. Patella tendons are serious injuries; sure, you can come back in 6-9 months, but for some players, then can severely limit you and end your career. If Strange isn't starting, teams will assume the patella injury is very serious. I wouldn't give a 7th for a guy who had such an injury and then was unable to regain his starting spot from a rookie or 2nd year player.

This is Andrew's last year, I can see Strange coming off pup and sharing snaps at center.

I will trust that Wallace can play LT until he shows that he can't.

REPEAT AFTER ME
backups aren't worth a 7th

or are they?

Yes, and 2022 was his last year, and 2023 so says this board

Of course he was.
Who do you think he targeted at pick 68?

I don’t think Strange has enough weight in the legs and butt to play center…center of gravity thing. He does however have the same physical build as Matt Light did.

Potentially permanently injured backups.

If Strange doesn't play/start this year, it will be because of his injury, not because of his abilities.

Now we can see why they stacked up on Guards. Nice knowing you Strange.
How many do you need? Onwenu, Sow, Strange, Mafi. You're going to use the #68 pick in the draft when your team has holes all over the place? Or so I'm told. What's next? Another QB (oooops, I guess so)?

He is making $6.5 million in this last year of his contract and will be 33 years old heading into free agency next year. After his pulmonary embolism in 2019, there is no guarantee he would resign for cheap money or that the team would want to sign him to a long-term. The sport has not treated his body well. I love the dud, but it's more likely than not that this is his last year as a patriot.

Agree. This might be his last year.

It might be time to use this as a transition year to rotate Jake as a center and move Andrews out . We need continuity for next 3-4 years with a rookie to maximize maye's rookie seasons 2-5. Every dollar saved can be used on other positions . This is the year to get the core team members identified.
