There's no way we go into the draft with $1 million in cap space. Too limiting for making deals. We don't need the space to make our picks, but we need space if we want to trade a pick for a player with any kind of contract.

I am going to make some assumptions to simplify.
1) leave the resolution of Thuney until after the draft.
2) announce the restructure of Mason or Gilmore (that'll give Bill flexibility)

COMMENTS

A) I don't see PR as a draft "need". We have several, and we can always pick up yet another UDFA per FA like gunner if necessary. For now, Byrd and Sanu are plenty.

B) I only focus on filling needs in the first 4 rounds, except for kicker who I expect to draft in the 5th. While there is always a pleasant surprise, I expect nothing in the 5th. 6th and 7th. If we get someone, it could be at any position.

C) The biggest mistake I think folks make is to sy that because a position is our #1 need, that means that Belichick will use our first draft pick.

The obvious case this year is at TE. I don't expect us to draft a TE until the 3rd, if they is anyone that Bill wants then. Much more likely is that Bill trades for a TE, and signs a couple in free agency.

IMO, the biggest "value" at 23 is likely to be at LB or DT, which is fine, since this is a major need. As an aside, I think the ILB is an important need. Of course, Bill may be planning to fill this need by trade as he often has in the past.

D) The "need" at OL depends on the health of who we have. If everyone is healthy, we just "need" backups at OC, and perhaps OT.

E) One of our five early picks will be a WR. I suspect that the pick will be in the 3rd round.

I still want Cesar Ruiz #1 to protect against Andrews problems and/or Thuney departure. However looking at your list, DL is really weak with Guy only productive DL and Allen an unknown effectiveness.

I think we trade back. Meat and potatoes draft, linemen on both sides of the ball in first 3 rounds.

I wouldn't mind if they traded picks for next year's picks. I heard it's a much deeper draft.

Why can't they go into the draft with $1m in cap space? There are no rules preventing them to do so.

While you don't always draft for need, I can't see passing over multiple positions of need to add players at positions where the Patriots are loaded like cornerback and running back.

No, but it limits trading options if they can;t fit that player under the cap.......Moss was acquired in a draft day ( day 2 or 3?) trade.. What if a trade situation presents itself but they can't clear space... I suspect they find a way to go into it with about $5 million.....

They 100% can. And make every pick too.

I think that they would prefer flexibility to react to the market. Value may present itself by making picks this year. Value could be with veterans from other teams too, that means they have to be ready to create space as required.

I see all these as possibilities. Especially trading Thuney and releasing Sanu. That alone creates significant cap space.

I agree that we are likely to have a transaction before the draft. However, Belichick might simply have an agreement to restructure with mason or Gilmore, with the understanding that he can announce it anytime he wishes. We should remember that restructures don't cut the player or anything, and generally don't change the compensation, although sometimes a bit of money is thrown in.

Trade -absolutely.

But there is no rule that mandates a team to be under the cap on draft day.

Agree 100%. If the reports are true re: Thuney/Pats not close to a deal I suspect he'll be moved during/immediately after the draft
