Its time for a retractable roof stadium in NE

For all those who say they love sitting in 5 degree wether with 2 feet of snow on the ground and seeing a 3-0 game with fumbles everywhere just to prove how tough they are, I say its BS. For those who say they want to get soaked to the bone and see 3 passes in a game I call BS.

The truthers out there will tell you, lets have a retractable roof, so when its nice out in September and October the roof stays open. But in December and January, 72 degrees and a clear field to watch teh athletes at their best is what Pats fans deserve.

With a retractable domed stadium, maybe some day a SB would come to NE.
Its the 21st century and time to put the comfort of the fans who pay big $$$ first.

Let's not talk about home field advantage either.
How does winning a 3-0 game in mud or slush with the QB going 3-42 prove anything. A good team should win in ideal playing conditions.

However, I would not want to see one penny of public money used to pay for it. The owners should put up every last cent.

I don’t think he will, he has spent a lot of money upgrading Gillette the last several years. Who knows maybe Jonathan does play the new stadium card when he takes over. They are making lots of money with Patriot Place being right next to Gillette.

I’m sure they’re playing tax angles with the improvements, and writing down depreciation as the building ages. They won’t need to Hild a new stadium as long as they can keep re-investing to improve the basis for depreciation. If they stop investing in upgrades and the depreciation runs out maybe they’d benefit from a new building, but it doesn’t seem imminent.

stadiums do not really wear out... what they lack are the expanding revenue streams of newer stadiums... adding a retractable roof to Gillette Stadium would cost what? a billion? a new open air stadium would cost two billion +/- ... a retractable roof? triple that... is the potential expanded revenue stream great enough to offset the expenditures?

NFL Stadiums have a shelf life of approximately 25 years to where the burden of constant maintenance and upgrades become unfeasible to keep an aging building that will never be new again.

On December 21, 2012, the Broncos announced a $30 million renovation project prior to the start of the 2013 season,

On December 14, 2022, the Broncos announced more than $100 million in upgrades to the stadium that would be completed during the off season and in time for the 2023 season.

Gillette is heading there too whether fans like it or not. The cost of adding a roof on Gillette now would be a sizeable down payment on a new stadium. There is no way that project could be completed in 12 months.

Closest would be the Pats/Raiders playoff game, and pretty sure there was nothing close to 2 feet of snow.

Even then, yes, I will welcome a different sight. Snow on the ground heightens the stakes, neutralizes advantages, and it's basically a precursor to playoff football (unless its 2009 and we are getting blizzards in October). I don't want every single game to look exactly the same. Would any of us remember that game against the Falcons in 2017 if it hadn't been for the thick fog cloud? Not me. The literal only thing I would ever change about Gillette is the traffic.

A have a large group of football friends on a group text and I can tell you every time there’s a snow game, everyone gets exited.
“Snow game in Pittsburgh”, and everyone turns to that game assuming your fav team isn’t playing h at the same time.

The weather in New England isn't nearly as bad as it was 15-20 years ago. We are unlikely to see another Snowbowl game or that freezing Titans playoff game or the game against Miami right after a blizzard and people were sitting on snow drifts again.

Also, I love bad weather games. It is an added challenge for both teams to overcome. I am not sure if I would love to see another game like the AFCCG last year or that game in Buffalo where Mac Jones only threw like three passes, but most bad weather games are not like that.

Lastly, I hate that most teams are going to domes. Football is supposed to be the tough sport unlike baseball where they call the game if it rains more than a misting.

When we see teams like Houston, LA, Miami, Tennessee, etc coming to NE late in the season for a big game with inclement weather in the forecast, I think we all feel pretty good about it.

I don't see any new stadium ideas coming for another 5-10 years... and it'll be Jonathan making decisions by the time they consider any major overhauls.

Bob Kraft's covenant with fans when Gillette came online was no PSLs. If/when it is replaced that could become a very difficult hurdle for Jonathan. Modern financing pretty much commands it, exhibit A being the new Bills stadium where PSLs are demanded of the fan base that can least afford them.
