Overpaying for declining players - first you surrender the picks; then you pay the guy - is foolish. Draft and develop is the way to go, not snatching at every shiny object that flashes into view. This is so whether you are talking about Myles Garret or - even worse, given the physical requirements of his position and his known knee problems - AJ Brown.

I hope some other team proves even dumber than those Pats bigwigs who want the AJ thing comes along and outbids us, or - better - that those bigwigs (and fans) come to their senses and we back out.

If we insist in dabbling in this nonsense, I would establish a firm ceiling for what I would give for Brown and absolutely decline to exceed that limit. Under no circumstances would I go higher than a second-rounder, and even that I think only gets us from downright irresponsible to merely garden-variety dumb.

After a spring of pundits telling us what we will do on June 2 or thereafter, it'll be fun to see what actually comes to pass. It might happen in June, it might happen at any time this summer, and it might well not happen, if the two sides plus the player can't agree on what's a good trade. I don't think the exorbitant asks we see bandied about will come to pass... like, a 1 and a three and Boutte in the bargain or something. But a 1 for Diggs minus several years? I'll take it. I think the cost and Diggs' age are the issues with him -- but he's a treasure if he can mentor younger guys on route-running (not to mention for his own value on-field).

Honestly, if he'll take a haircut, I want him back, but I think he can get 1 money and 1 looks elsewhere. I'd take him as a functional 1 who catches 83% of what Drake Maye throws his way. I just fear the inevitable decline.

we will know for sure about Brown soon, right?
but what if the deal is a 2028 2nd, and the cap hit on Brown this year in $7m....and he scores 10 td's. 60 1st downs. 65% catch percent.
is that foolish?

Sorry i posted this in the OTA message... but could they trade Gonzo plus a future pick for Garrett? What else would Cleveland want... that's good fair trade for both teams... since it appears the Pats don't value Gonzo in the system the way Gonzo values himself in the system and with him taking OTAs off....

How can anyone say that the Patriots don't value Gonzalez without knowing what they have offered him? Are they simply supposed to hand him whatever his agent is asking for? This is an intelligent front office that has done an amazing job of turning this franchise around in less than a year and a half and they aren't just going to cave in to agent demands anytime a good player's contract is coming up.

Curious as to why not?
If you have a chance of getting an all-timer still in his prime at his position, what would be the reasons you wouldn't do it? I'm legitimately curious. I'm generally pretty hesitant to trade a huge pick or multiple picks for a player, but this is the one situation where I'd be ok with it.

This isn't a knock on you, I just genuinely want to know why it's a 'huge no'.

Myles Garrett isn't Micah Parsons, aka, the EDGE player you can get in every first round ever. He's one of the best to ever put on a jersey.

Yep. I hate giving up 1st round picks but there are times where it's the right move. Last season Vrabel was asked about being in on the Parsons trade and his response was " we aren't at that point yet," he realized they were a rebuilding team that shouldn't give away first round picks for a star player. This year it's pretty clear that they believe they have most of the rebuild done and that the AFC is wide open, so they now believe that using high picks to try and put them over the top to win championships is a viable move. You don't give away 2 first round picks for just a franchise player, but Garrett isn't just a " franchise player" he's a first ballot Hall of Fame player at a position that changes the outcome of big games. It's similar to a situation where you can get Rob Gronkowski for 2 first round picks, and you already have a true contender. I realize that some here would never trade 2 first round picks, but I would make that deal.

In this situation I would trade 2 first round picks for Garrett, and then I would re-sign Diggs to fill out the WR corps. There are times where you have to make gutsy moves to get yourself a great shot at winning it all, Garrett for 2 firsts would be one of those moves.

If th his option is in play I would be on the phone to Cleveland, and I would make sure that Adam Schefter knew it, then Howie Roseman would find himself with no leverage.

In this situation I would trade 2 first round picks for Garrett

I'd strap a bomb to myself, run into the Gillette front office scream "Admiral Ackbar" and blow myself up if this happened.

Including the AJ Brown trade, we wouldn't have a first rounder for the next half decade. Not good for thou and I.

You can't make the trade if the Brown trade goes through.
