If Brown didn’t have issues there wouldn’t even be talk of a trade. Let’s face it, any elite player that ends up on the trade block for cheap will have some issues. Given that, if you are going to trade for anybody it might as well be AB. He’s as elite as they come.

Edit: PS: with that being said, there is no chance of it happening. But I said the same thing about Gordon so who knows?

Gordon's total cap hit for the 2018 season was around $700k.

AB's cap hit for the 2019 season will be $742k ... per game.

I'd take him. I would love for Brady to have a target like him to throw to to end his career. Not that it's going to happen though. Pittsburgh would probably rather pay him to sit on the bench than trade him to the Pats.

You - everyone here, actually - should follow @Miguel on Twitter (twitter.com/patscap). There is no more accurate source for info on the Pats real cap numbers, contracts and cap constraints.

He's using a 2019 salary cap projection of $189m (splitting the difference), and he estimates that the Pats starting 2019 cap space will be about $18.1m. That's with only 43 players currently under contract, and 22 in-house free agents to sign - including Flowers, Trent Brown, Ryan Allen and Gost - not to mention maybe $5m-$6m in rookie contracts to absorb, and the need to preserve a ~$6m cap space cushion to handle injury replacements and LTBE incentives during the regular season.

Absorbing AB's $12.625m (or more) cap hit for 2019 wouldn't be as easy as it looks.

You’re not going to get any better than this for a player of Brown’s talent. His salary is pretty reasonable if traded before the 5th day of the league year on 3-17 (as Miguel notes) when his roster bonus is due.

That said, no way that PIT would entertain any thoughts of trading him to NE.

Perhaps I have it backwards.

My understanding is that, if AB is traded before 3-17, his roster bonus goes with his contract to the acquiring team ... $12.625m salary + $2.5m roster bonus = $15.125m cap hit to the acquiring team for 2019.

OTOH, if he's traded after 3-17, the Steelers eat the roster bonus, and the cap hit to the acquiring team is "only" the $12.625m salary.

Not a huge fan of a trainwreck who essentially abandons his team on the eve of a playoff... not sure in the Pats economic system he would be worth the high draft picks that it would cost.. Need to remember the Pats #1 will be in the high 20's or low 30's ( my preference) so there is not a lot of draft capital of value..

It may be a lot easier knowing that his last 6 seasons have produced yearly averages of 115 catches for about 1500 yards and 11 touchdowns.
One can make a pretty strong case that he’s the best WR in the game.

Allen, HT, and Gronk would add about 23m in cap space alone, and while it’s not realistic to expect all three to be gone, we could certainly see 2/3.

IIRC, @Miguel may have already accounted for that in his $18.1m cap space estimate. Or, maybe not.
