Interesting article I just ran across, a bit disjointed, but something new to talk about at least. The gist of the article is that BB/NE's culture of team before self, A.K.A "do your job", is directly related to the sustained run of NFL dominance and sports excellence in general.

Article:
GATA making a comeback at GSU

"Platitudes don’t mean a hill of beans to me when it comes to analyzing success in sports. However culture is something I think is real.

Culture is evident in a number of organizations throughout professional sports. The New England Patriots come to mind as an immediate example of an organization whose culture directly contributes to their success on the field."

Some more from article:
GATA making a comeback at GSU

"It all starts with the owner Robert Kraft. If you want to win in any line of sport, it starts from the top down. Kraft is hands off, doesn’t meddle in the team’s daily business and merely serves as a cash cow and hiring specialist to help keep the team afloat.

Over the years Kraft has hired the right people in key positions to contribute to the team’s success. The most obvious of the bunch being head coach Bill Belichick. Belichick not only serves as the team’s head coach but as the team’s general manager as well – giving him an unusual amount of power in one franchise.

Over the years who hear about the “Patriot Way” coming out of the New England locker room. As former Patriot Kevin Faulk puts it in the Player’s Tribune:

The Patriot Way ain’t about nothing but winning, man. That’s it. See, Coach Belichick is the kind of guy who doesn’t care what you do on your own time. He wants you to know football and he wants you to come to work every day and do your job to the best of your ability. Anything else, he doesn’t really care."

If you're like me after reading the original article, I was like what the heck is GATA and who is Erik Russel.

Definition GATA (wiki Erik Russell):

During a road game at Georgia Tech, Coach Russell saw a Yellow Jacket trainer in a sweatshirt reading "G.T.A.A."---"Georgia Tech Athletic Association"---and came up with the idea of rearranging the letters to produce a memorable slogan: "G.A.T.A."---"Get After Their Asses".

Perhaps the most lasting impression was Russell ramming his bald dome into a helmeted player to celebrate a turnover or key play, leaving his forehead drenched in blood.

Coach Russell was a master motivator who did not forget that, as someone who molded young men in a university setting, he was a teacher first and foremost. He passed along life lessons, and not just defensive techniques, to his players and he knew how to get his message across to them.

In conclusion, overall, it's tough to deny that NE's sum has been greater than it's parts for much of this 15+ year run, and individual player selflessness and buying into the system has had much to do with it.
