Non Sequitur

(Actually, Yahoo links aren't the most stable, so if somebody has a better one ...)

Wiley is a genius, one of the first I read everyday.

I hope there's a class action lawsuit somewhere after the current court motions to prove the investigation as fraud. It was publically advertised as independent despite clear evidence to the contrary.

Congratulations to someone who actually comes out and told the WHOLE truth. No qualifiers, no limitations, no intimations of the possibility of guilt, just a statement that Brady is innocent, and the league misrepresented the facts to support a flawed position. PERFECT. We need many, many more of these.

Wiley should be immediately entered into the VERY thin book of respected mediots, and his strip should be linked to Patsfans, and be a mandatory by each of us, not only because it is generally very good, but because he stood up and FINALLY called a spade a spade.

Good find Fence

This is rich! Thanks for sharing.

Wiley is great, as is his strip. My other two favorites are "Bloom County", and "Calvin and Hobbs".

Wiley set that up the previous day with this.

"Oh... you mean junk science to validate bogus claims for delusional people who won't admit being wrong". Brilliant!
Reminds me of this hoax that went around the world about chocolate leading to weight loss. The study was real though, and the numbers were legit, yet it was worthless.

I Fooled Millions Into Thinking Chocolate Helps Weight Loss. Here's How.

Here’s a dirty little science secret: If you measure a large number of things about a small number of people, you are almost guaranteed to get a “statistically significant” result. Our study included 18 different measurements—weight, cholesterol, sodium, blood protein levels, sleep quality, well-being, etc.—from 15 people. (One subject was dropped.) That study design is a recipe for false positives.

The problem is you don't really need to be a con man to pull this off. You can be sincere, and fool yourself through methodology.

I think the day will come when journalism will either have to tighten up its profession or die on the vine as readers tend to be more critical of the stories than the "journalists" themselves. Hell, when I read stories, I tend to find the comments more insightful than the story itself. I thought maybe we were seeing the beginning of that trend in 2006 when that blogger exposed Reuters during the Second Lebanon War, but it hasn't panned out. Maybe if enough people and respected journalists start getting better exposure when they blow up these bogus stories (like Framegate), the industry can save itself, but we'll see.

Something will have to give before too long.

Just remember, when you're calling Goodell a horse's *ss, you're insulting Lucy and horses everywhere

Consider that if people were willing to accept the bogus claims on face value they'd be laughing at all right now.

Just more paid-for peer-reviewed nonsense! Most don't understand that a Ph.D does not really get a return on their so-called "investment" if they do not get published. Yeah, it's all about getting published for them, and for some- at all costs. Hence, many of the bogus claims that get reversed years later. FYI: a good chunk of the Ph.D curriculum is statistics and statistical analysis..I believe around 6 courses- more that are in their field of actual study! Essentially, they are taught how to statistically prove nonsense, if need be. Of course, that should not be the objective, but is increasingly so.
