CMU Pro-Day: Joe Staley blows them away

By TFY Draft Preview

Posted Mar 15, 2007

All 32-teams, including the offensive line coaches from eleven different franchises, descended upon Central Michigan University this morning for the Chippewas pro-day. The early returns are in and the prospect they came to see did not disappoint.

Offensive tackle Joe Staley was the star of the show.

Weighing in at 304-pounds, Staley's forty-times ranged between 4.79-and-4.82 seconds. His times in the short-shuttle and 3-cone were 4.30 and 7.17-seconds respectively. Staley then marked 32-inches in the vertical jump and 9-feet-4-inches in the broad.

He looked outstanding in position drills. Staley did not participate in the bench press today, standing on the 27 repetitions he completed at the combine.

Several coaches on hand stated it was one of the best workouts by an offensive lineman they had ever witnessed. One coach claimed Staley "made millions for himself today" after the workout was complete.

The Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions all sent offensive line coaches to specifically watch Staley.

So to did the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots. All three of these teams have set up dates to individually workout Staley.

While the other numbers from the workout have been slow coming in, sources on the scene have told us defensive end Dan Bazuin, who turned in a terrible performance at the combine, looked good today. He was faster and looked fluid during drills.

Hopefully he'll go early and push someone else to the Pats!!

Re: Well, We Can Forget About Staley...

Good report on Bazuin, we'll have to check his new times.

If so, then hopefully another defender gets pushed down to us.

Re: Well, We Can Forget About Staley...

Interesting KC picks at 23, their OLine is not very good anymore. They could be very interested in a player like Staley.

Could it be worth it to trade into the top 15 and try to get this guy locked up for 6 years?

03/16/07 - Former Central Michigan left tackle Joe Staley had an impressive pro day workout on Thursday and the Dolphins, who have strong interest in him, were on hand, according to scout John Murphy of Yahoo! Sports. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Staley, a former tight end, was timed around 4.8 in the 40-yard dash and also had great times in agility drills. Staley also had a 32-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-9 broad jump. He opted not to bench press after doing 27 reps at the combine "That was probably one of the best all-around workouts I've seen by a big tackle in recent years," a veteran offensive line scout told Murphy. "He (Staley) moves around like a defensive back: light on his feet and just great movement skills and agility. "My personal assessment would be that kid does not last past the Top-20 picks. Just too much ability and the potential to lock down a left tackle spot for the next 10 years." I've been told by several people for a while now that this the guy the Dolphins want at left tackle, not Penn State's Levi Brown. Brown is slipping and is viewed by a lot of people as more of a right tackle. Does that mean the Dolphins won't take Brown? No. But I'm told he's nowhere near worth the ninth pick in this draft. - Palm Beach Post

No - we keep hearing how Willis and Nelson will be gone but every "forget about X" thered - Revis is next - increases the chance of one of those supposed untouchable being there at #24.

Some truth to this, absolutely, but on the flip side you have guys like Levi Brown threatening to slide out of their "sure-thing" slots.

Didn't KC recently sign Dolphins LT Damion McIntosh? If so, then Staley may not be their man at 23; I think they should take a WR.

I agree that every QB, RB, OL, TE, WR and DL drafted before 24 helps us find the LB or DB we need.

Joe Staley Blazes In Pro Day

STALEY BLAZES IN PRO DAY

Central Michigan tackle Joe Staley, who was expected to be a star of the scouting combine but who didn't work out due to a hamstring injury, made up for his absence during his Pro Day workout, cranking out a 4.79 in the 40-yard dash.

Heck, he might be able to beat Duce Staley in a footrace. (Unless there was a cake at the finish line.)

Here's the usual disclaimer -- we don't know whether Staley ran on a track, FieldTurf, grass, or hot coals. If he ran on a fast surface, his time will be adjusted upward.

But even with an extra 0.1, it's still a blazing time for a big fella. Heck, there's a chance that USC receiver Dwayne Jarrett won't run the 40 that fast.

If this moves Staley up the board someone else will likely fall.

Sorry, I forget there was already a thread about this.
