Celtics 2026-2027 Discussion

Queta might improve this year if he can stay out of foul trouble. That might actually be true if only because the refs might call him less tightly with Brown gone. The refs sucked last year and really showed some major bias against the Celtics, which Brown commented on several times.

I'd love to see the refs call the Celtics the same way they call the other team for a season.

LeBron to the Sixers. Interesting.
Kindof affirms Steven's assessment of next season and what appears to be a plan to peak when other teams are weak in a few years.

Miami and the Sixers in the Eastern Division are stocking up to beat the Knicks. Rather than abandon the luxury cap reset he's investing in the future now, with those three teams looking at their own luxury tax salary dumps when the Celtics should be peaking.

We might be having a different conversation if we'd gotten Giannis, though even there I don't think they'd abandon the luxury cap savings as they'd be fitting him in to Brown's salary slot.

Maybe Queta develops into a complete center with another year starting (Robinson will spell him for D) - but we couldn't compete with the Sixers as is last year so I don't see us being better than them, Miami, or the Knicks in the playoffs.

You've got to stagger your championship rosters the way the CBA is set up - Stevens knows this, and still needs to make the right picks and have good health, but I'd rather see another banner later than mortgage the future to compete against those lineups now.

We might want to create a 2027-2028 season discusion too because that's the earlierst

Last I heard they still play the game with only one ball so it should be interesting with so many Alphas.
For a guy who constantly runs his mouth in interviews that championships don’t matter because it’s a team sport when trying to proclaim himself as the greatest, he sure seems to pick engineered teams that offer the least resistance to winning one. Or I should say that is the initial perception. Just wait until they start struggling and everyone else on the team is blamed. This is simply the LeBron cycle.

And we know how well Brown takes playing second fiddle, let alone 4th on the Sixers with Embid, Maxey and now James ahead of him.

It wouldn't be the first time a great team on paper didn't live up to expectations in real life.

Stevens clearly puts a lot of stock on team chemistry - it will be interesting to see how this works out for Philly.

Embiid could be done for his career anytime. James is a shell of himself. Maxey and Brown are a good duo.

I like what Brad is doing. The Celtics may not be a top contender this year, but they are focused on the long game. But also if you look at the trend, they went from champions to out in the second round to out in the first round. So it’s not like he was breaking up a championship squad this off-season. I see that Walsh got a three-year extension. So they are doubling down on their homegrown talent. A lot of of these teams in the east are not much better than the Celtics but have given up a lot of future draft compensation to get there.

Honestly, I feel like the biggest loser. This off-season is Miami and not the Celtics. I don’t see how Miami is even a top four team in the east. They have like nothing to fall back on either. The Sixers got LeBron on a cheap deal and got rid of Paul Jorge so even though I questioned the team chemistry, you can’t really argue with shaking things up and taking a solid gamble.

Yes, such a shell of himself he just played 33 minutes a game, averaging 21 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds.

It's not new to see players "collude" to assemble a team they think can dominate - it's clear that's what the Sixers have done, with LeBron's help, agreeing to sign for half of what Anfernee Simons is getting isn't quite in the spirit of the NBA salary cap, but nothing illegal about it. Though we all know player egos can get in the way of that.

That being said, the Sixers aren't exactly spending much more than the Celtics are even in this reboot season while they're fielding what they hope will be a dream team, but there"s still some shoes yet to fall such as, will they extend Brown for another two years at $71 million a season now that he's eligible? And if they won't, will he be a problem child on the court, looking at a lot fewer shots than he had in his "favorite season?"

But it's important to look at how the Celts are spending up to (but not above) the luxury tax ceiling even while rebooting. They've now extended Queta and Walsh to contracts that follow the Peyton Pritchard model of having players who outperform their low contacts, allowing the team to carry multiple gamechangers at higher salaries, once they get out of the albatross of George's contract and are past the luxury tax constraints for what will hopefully be a dynasty run timed to coincide with other teams in the East having to disassemble to get out of their own cap nightmares.

Overall I look at the Celtics roster and I see guys that Stevens has under cheap control for years, many of whom have the potential to be game changers themselves, including Gonzales, Scheierman, and Cenac as well as Queta and Walsh. He actually chose NOT to trade those guys for Giannis, so obviously has some confidence in their potential.

So he's locking in good core guys who will come of age in 2 years or sooner, while still on cheap contracts at a time when he'll be adding one or two game changing players AND when other teams will be on the decline.

We'll just have to let it play out now but there is a method to Stevens' madness.

All that everyone is saying about Stevens managing the salaries is spot on. But what kind of message does it send us when he is so set on staying within the cap constraints when teams that ignore that seem to win... kinda like the 2024 Celtics? If Brad was following these strict guidelines, would that team have existed?

It seems to me that to field a great team, you have to spend over the cap. The NBA is not like the NFL. A team needs at least 2 superstars & several more excellent players to win most games.

What I'm implying here is that if the "cheap contract" players become the next superstars, are they gone when they're eligible for a big payday? It certainly looks that way.

Compare that to his stats the previous season. He's not going to be any better. He's on the edge of that cliff. He's lucky to have 3 All-Stars/All-NBA players and one future All-Star on that team.

Edit: I think like 50 players averaged 20ppg last year so it's not 2010 anymore.

You're not wrong about what it takes to win championships. But basically the CBA makes it near impossible to continue to field such a team and no owners seem keen on paying the compounding luxury tax by not taking the reboot.

They're willing to pay the luxury tax but it wouldn't make sense now and would hamstring their ability to continue to field a contender. They'll be paying it for years after the reboot BUT with a team that has (I expect) a dominant Center who will replace George's spot on the roster after next year (hopefully if they can offload him as an expiring contract in return for one that fits the salary slot but is worthy of extension.

Stevens made the call that paying the Jays extension of $70 million a year, one after the other, doesn't put them over the top without a strong C. He believes that there are multiple guys on the roster who can step up to make up JB's points (I think he's right) and use that for a C who will give them what they need in the playoffs.

Derick White of course is another high paid player at $40 mil - given that they lost out on the Giannis sweepstakes I don't rule out that he could be traded, but we've got him through 2028-29 and for now I believe the thinking is that he will be an asset in the 27-28 seasons when they will also have the Center they need.

It remains to be seen if JB will get that extension from the Sixers, though maybe they think he'll accept his contract as is if they win a championship, but again, seems like Stevens didn't think JB would be accepting of playing out his existing contract without an extension here, so that too is the right call.

Lebron was 35th in the league in points per game and shot 31% from 3. He will be like 50th in the league this year with sub-30% from 3. Father time is undefeated.

Lebron did sign for the minimum, so it is not a bad signing, but there are a bunch of more talented (younger) guys to sign.

There is no reason to talk to Ro, he is commonly angry and snippet.

What does it mean to be 'snippet'?

Also, **** you too. I realize that you're the only one allowed to be positive or negative about anything, but still, just **** off and put me on ignore. Both our lives will be improved.

You must be fun at parties.

The problem with LeBron is always the same. It really isn’t about his stats and efficiency rating. It’s that he changes the way everyone has to play and fit in. His teams are rarely as good as he would expect led by a player with his splits. You saw on the Lakers last year that they were doing extremely well with Luka and Reeves and just like I predicted as soon as LeBron returned, the team totally lost its identity. I see in Philadelphia, they’ve already gone out and signed his former teammate, KCP undoubtedly due to LeBron’s urging.

Now you have to deal with LeBron, the GM and his little posse and his crybaby attitude. As I said, I still take this deal if I’m the Sixers because it’s two years $8 million so you can’t really argue with that and you have to declare them big winners here, but with LeBron, you are not simply getting a cog in the wheel, you are getting the whole **** show that comes along with it.

In terms of his fake ass joke legacy, this is just the final chapter. Imagine Michael Jordan joining the 2003 Lakers to ring chase. Going to Cleveland or Miami, maybe even Golden State, made sense as natural career ending destinations. This one reeks of desperate ring chasing again, from a guy who says ring count is overrated.

you are getting the whole **** show that comes along with it.
And the 76ers have Brown who is smarter than LeBron. How is that going to work out?

Remember when the Clippers won the Kawhi Leonard sweepstakes from the Lakers? The Clippers were going to be unbeatable.

The 76ers are going to be very interesting this year. And imagine if they don't pick up Brown's two more years at $71M per. LOL.
