RIP Jordan Devey

CTE may end football. Too dangerous. Any former player has to worry It's a debilitating thing. So sad. May he RIP
This and gambling. Won't be tomorrow, but it's what will end the product.

It all goes back to greed & corruption. The fact that the NFL/NHL and helmet companies haven’t figured out a way to make helmets better when it comes to football & hockey, is disgraceful. Concussions should not be so prevalent in sports. If you ever see the documentary called “League of Denial”, the greed & corruption (mainly by Roger Goodell, I know, shocking) is front & center.
And now the Guardian cap has been developed and tested, to reduce concussions, yet players and fans are opposing its adoption.

To be totally forward, there's really no way to have full contact football and make concussions go away. A 200-250-300lb person barreling towards you, at a 4.x 40yd speed, will invariably result in concussions, regardless of how good helmet tech gets.

A decade ago I was wondering this. But football (especially collegiate and professional) is just too big of a lucrative part of our culture. It’s not going anywhere.

Best thing that can be done is to mitigate what you can and keep people as informed of the risks as you can. Devey’s generation largely did not have that until late into his college years.

The big picture of the sport is just too large of a swath to cover.

You always hear about these awful stories. But the reality is that an outcome this grim remains a very small portion of former players.

This goes back to the logic example behind operating a vehicle. You live with the reality that there’s a percentage chance that, at some point in your life, it could cost you your life.

Life is about those trade-offs. The vast majority of players likely accept the trade-offs, the benefits the game gives them, and the opportunity to do something with their lives they truly loved and that gave them purpose. Especially now, with the money paid out to players today and the transparency around the risks. This isn’t 1974 anymore, when starting NFL players were upper middle class.

There’s still plenty of other factors involved in these decisions that we have no clue about. Players are also dealing with lost purpose in their lives, addictions, childhood trauma, financial issues, among other things. CTE is a major factor in these outcomes, but it’s not the only individual factor at play.
