2027 Watch List

I think I'm going to love Clev Lubin this year. What this video showed me is just how physical is with big offensive linemen. He's a little undersized, but he's not a twitched up edge rusher afraid of contact.

Watch the whole video, but I've linked it to a play where he blows up a guard.

My ideal defense from this draft. I've gone with an early round option and a later round uption (not first two rounds). I'm also going 4-3-4 as we don't need a NCB.

EDGE

Early round - Yhonzae Pierre, Will Heldt
Later round - Clev Lubin, Taylor Wein

1T DT

Early - Will Echoles
Later - Jayden Jackson, Oklahoma (this is probably a cheat. will rise!)

3/5t

Early - Ahmad Moten
Later - Jide Abasiri, USC

MIKE

Early - Sammy Brown/KVA
Later - Ray Coney

WILL

Early - Ben Roberts
Later - Tony Rojas

SAM

Early - Chris Cole
Later - Isaiah Glasker, BYU howver TBD really

CB

Too many to choose from but...

Early - Zabien Brown, Kelly Jones
Later - Brice Pollock, Chris Peal

(Technically according to the database I use, Peal and Pollock are round three guys but I acknowledge this feels like cheating. I just haven't done enough research on possible day 3 corners yet. Same with safeties below).

Safety

Early - KJ Bolden, Jelani Mcdonald
Later - Dashawn Spears, Tao Johnson (not Tae)

Tae v Tao Johnson is going to get very confusing.

This exercise has made me realise I don't know enough about day 3 guys yet.

Both Sam Teets and his British colleague were not at all high on Chris Peal in their detailed CB preview for the Draft Professor that I posted yesterday . In fact, that's how I was certain that the British dude wasn't Manx.

I go 4 - 2 - 5 in my ideal defense. My LBs have to be very versatile, and my "base" is a Big Nickel.

My ideal fits to complement what we already have in place:

- DL: Williams Echoles, A'Mauri Washington
- EDGE: Yhonzae Pierre, Boubacar Traore
- LB: Chris Cole, KVA, Sammy Brown
- S: Jelani McDonald, Tae Johnson, Zach Lutmer, Dashawn Spears, Ty Benefield
- CB: Ellis Robinson IV, Zabien Brown, Kelley Jones, Brice Pollack

I think if it were today I would go defensive BPA. My current defensive big board is something like:

1. Leonard Moore
2. Colin Simmons
3. Dylan Stewart
4. Ellis Robinson IV
5. A'Mauri Washington
6. Will Echoles
7. KVA
8. Sammy Brown
9. Ahmad Moten
10. David Stone
11. Yongzhae Pierre
12. Zabien Brown
13. Kelly Jones
14. Jelani McDonald
15. Tae Johnson

1-3 are no-brainers but will be long gone.

I think I would prioritize dominance at DL or CB over LB in the 1st, but not sure.

Updating my board. Today is the day I go all in on Chris Cole (currently 114 on the Consensus Big Board) as my early 2027 riser:

1. Leonard Moore
2. Colin Simmons
3. Dylan Stewart
4. Chris Cole
5. Ellis Robinson IV
6. A'Mauri Washington
7. Will Echoles
8. KVA
9. Sammy Brown
10. Ahmad Moten
11. David Stone
12. Yongzhae Pierre
13. Zabien Brown
14. Kelly Jones
15. Jelani McDonald
16. Tae Johnson
17. KJ Bolden

3 players from Georgia and ND, 2 each from Alabama and Texas.

It's a good list except,,,,,,and I know your reasoning on this...I do think you're too low on Bolden.

You are probably right, as usual.

What do the British know anyway. Anyway, I'm Manx! which isn't British.

So you want to fix the linebacker room. I'm going to give you a choice which I think is nicely balanced and I want to know which direction you'd go.

Option 1

Kynggston Viliamu-Asa/Sammy Brown plus Tony Rojas

Option 2

Ray Coney plus Ben Roberts

Both options net you a plus MIKE and a plus WILL. However, KVA/Brown are currently rated higher than Coney but Roberts is rated higher than Rojas. Option 2 does have the current advantage of allowing you to go in a different direction with the first pick.
With Elliss a UFA, are you having whomever you pick as the Spillane replacement spend a year in Elliss' role?? Or are you playing your Elliss' replacement immediately and having your Spillane replacement learning from the Bench?

I found this excellent cut up of Chris Cole, the Georgia linebacker. It's good because it splits up his run defense, coverage reps and pass rush snaps in three separate blocks.

The first coverage rep at 1:25 where he runs downfield with a WR is particularly impressive. also check out the range on KJ Bolden on that play.

Also, Cole is no slouch as a pass rusher with what looks to be very good length.

I think run defense might be the weakest part of his game.

What really stood out to me in those clips is that Cole is patient. Instead of guessing which Gap the RB is going to and ploughing in and washing yourself out the way that Elliss does so much, Cole lets the RB commit before hitting the hole. There was one play against Ole-Miss where the Ole-Miss Guard should have blocked him, but was standing around like "What do I do now, George", which allowed Cole to get all the way across to make the play.

The fact that Cole has versatility (Georgia used him off the edge for pass rushing) is beneficial but he seems like he'd make a good Mike.
