Disagree with this logic completely. The Patriots won 6 Lombardi's by being in the hunt every season. The only team that I can think of that won a Lombardi by loading up for a year is the Rams. Every other team that has tried it has failed.
They won 6 Super Bowl's because their QB was Tom Brady who played at a unattainable level for almost 20 years. They had a HC who was considered arguably the best defensive mind/strategist the NFL has ever seen in BB. When the Pats needed to make moves, Bill made them via draft, trade and FA's (most of the time). They are an apples to oranges comparison with the rest of the league. They are a complete aberration of the salary cap era and should not be followed as an example.
However, the point is that many teams play for a
future that don't even know what it entails. In fact, history has already given them their answer. In your example, the Rams haven't won a Super Bowl since 1999. You don't think what they did in 2021 was worth it? They've drafted well since, yet haven't won anything in 5 years now. Their window with Stafford is closing.
The 2000's Rams couldn't draft for **** and neglected the OL. Nobody thought they'd be one and done after 1999 with that core group of players.
The most valuable franchise in the NFL can't even get to an NFCCG since 1995. What future are they playing for exactly?
The 49ers haven't won since 1994 and had two windows that were squandered by arrogance. Their roster is bare now.
John Elway with Terrell Davis was never going to win a Super Bowl had the Broncos not landed Neil Smith, lucking out on Rod Smith emerging at WR and..... cheating the salary cap.
Packers were never going to win in the 1990's had they Cowboys not imploded and they landed Reggie White in FA. Ron Wolf struggled badly after they won in 1996. Aaron Rodgers would've won at least two more rings had the Packers taken things more seriously.
The Colts had a damn good QB in Andrew Luck, but the Colts neglected the OL and defense so badly it forced Luck to retire early.
The Chiefs are at the same crossroads the Pats were at in 2008 with their roster taking a nosedive and QB coming off a serious injury. It is not a guarantee Mahomes has the same drive Tom Brady had and takes his conditioning to another level. It is also not a guarantee KC lands a once in generation TE in Gronk to get them over the hump.
There are many examples of squandered opportunities by NFL teams playing for the
future.
Drake Maye is going into his 3rd season. I don't understand any argument of going all in and sacrificing future seasons of his career for a slightly better chance at one championship.
See the Andrew Luck case above. OL is the #1 priority at minimum. Again, you're assuming the Patriots are going to win multiple championships when the only teams with multiple titles in the last 30 years are Pats (6), Rams (2), Packers (2), Chiefs (3), Ravens (2), Eagles (2), Broncos (3), Giants (2), Steelers (2), Seahawks (2), Bucs (2).
Only the Pats, Chiefs, Giants and Steelers won multiple titles with many of the same players. The correlation is that majority of the teams with multiple titles won in different eras with different coaches and players. Nothing in the NFL is guaranteed and you need to take advantage of it while you can. If you don't address weaknesses early on, more weaknesses will emerge making it too difficult to overcome. See the Bills who know have needs almost everywhere.
