What position do you WANT Vrabel et al to draft first?

Agree on TE, not so much on RB.

In a crazy world where the ND RB slid to 31 I’d dead ass consider it.

Not much depth in this years RB class and I DO think they need more than Hendo and Mondre. Odd to me that they didn’t sign a servicable vet in FA.

That said, OT/Edge are the real spots I think they go at 31 if possible.
If Love somehow dropped to 31 you'd be crazy not to take him.
He's twice as good as Ashton Jeanty who got taken in the top 10 last year.

Can he play OL?

I went with Edge but Right tackle would be my second option.

Yeah worst thing that can (and likely will) happen is a run on OT and everyone includong Ihanachor is gone before 31. No one else left worthy of a #1

Edge is much deeper than tackle this year. If Miller or Iheanachor are available, I think it’s a better course of action to grab one of them rather than hope that it works out next year.

I voted OT. I think there will not be any good enough OTs later in the draft. We could be moving on from both Onwenu and Moses next offseason. It would be necessary having a plug ready player with a year’s experience and someone dependable. And possible Pro Bowler. I think there will be one of those available at 31.

Unless a player like Sadiq TE drops to them (or not gonna happen) LB Styles then I can see a position of less need taken. Realistically Its got to be a toss up Edge or Tackle. Who ever they have rated the highest at either of these position left on the board. I voted Edge but Tackle is probably the right play and best available at 31. Full Disclosure I really like Banks even with the injuries and limited playing time last year.

Looks like a good majority firmly believe that protecting our best RB and QB - both of whom happen to be Drake Maye - is the key to this team winning games.

There's good value for OL at #31 and we need a RT of the future (who might be able to backup at LT too)

I think Edge will be our 2nd pick as outside of the top of the first round, it becomes a crap shoot.

I'm surprised no one has voted TE though I know this is just for the first pick - I'd think we'll be looking for a pass catching TE but I put that as the #3 pick, which could easily go WR there too with TE later - but TE to me will be a position worth tracking in the draft.

Yes, we should take a non-QB top 5 pick if one drops to us.

Hmmmm, trading down. Maybe one of the draftniks could help me out. What would be the kind of return the Pats could expect from a trade down that would keep our 2nd rounder in the 38-45 range? Would be an additional 3rd or even a lower 2nd? plus. The Problem with a trade down this year is that we already have 11 picks, 2nd highest in the league and we are NOT going to keep 11 rookies on this team. Would you give up 31 to pick at say 40 and 63 to get an extra 2nd next year or would it take more.
Trading down to 40-45 gets us a mid to lower 3rd. Less gets us a 4th.

I use the charts from drafttek.com.

If the top OT's and EDGE rushers are gone, I could see trading down a bit to take one the EDGE rushers. But I'm not a fan. 31 should be a sweet spot to get a top OT or EDGE rusher. I'd be more likely to want to trade up a couple of spots with a 4th to get the man we want.

I would definitely do the 31 for 40 with the 2nd next year. No brainer. I would do a 2027 first for this years 31 straight up and not look back. It would make for a not so fun draft this year, but depending on the team, it could be phenomenal value in a a class that some are projecting to be one of the great ones in 27.

I don’t know about the value equations, but for a moment you had me excited about shifting picks out to next year to restock our draft board in anticipation of spending some 2027 draft picks on AJ Brown. But now, after reading @Patriot Missile below, saying the 3027 draft is supposed to be so good, I’m thinking I’d rather not spend any picks on AJ, preferring to just shift the picks into next year and then take them in that deep draft pool.

The only problem, of course, is that almost everyone knows this,** so you'll need a desperate team to make that trade.

**Almost because, for example, Belichick looked at the 2017 draft and said "meh," while the Saints absolutely nailed the first three rounds.

No one thinks that Barkley was a poor draft choice (and the GMs who passed over Derrick Henry should be sacked). I'm in no position to say whether the Notre Dame guy is in the same class. But, in general, the drop-off from the best running backs in the draft to the ones below is nothing like as sharp as it is at other positions. Not to mention the injury issues that running backs have.

Best available player, preferably offensive tackle or defensive line.

Small guys are more plentiful…

I think it was more a case of BB looking at his team entering the 2017 off-season, realizing a rookie would have a hard time cracking that 2016 Super Bowl winning roster and punting into the next offseason.

There’s another alternative, you trade back and instead of receiving another pick… you swap later picks. If another team has a much higher 2nd rounder or 3rd rounder for example you move up higher into that round.

I’d prefer this, that would give them near back to back picks in the 2nd round or middle rounds where great value is found.

at 31 I want best player available with an eye to positions of need (edge, T, S, TE, LB) not necessarily in that order

First order of business... WTF

Second.... BPA
Third: Holes at LB, Edge, TE need to be addressed, but BPA still, minding that the draft board is organic and runs on position groups happen.
