Football inherently has political aspects to it, and with it, discussion can unravel into a larger macro discussion about those politics:
Cap spending - money, ownership, share, pay, etc.
Player's behavior - you're lying if you think you haven't injected your own morals into why or why not a player "deserves" to play for a team, which brings into discussion what structures exist in upholding a blood sport, roles of organizations vs. the NFL vs. the law and its structures in dealing with issues, etc.
Rules - brings into question the priorities of the NFL, which involves discussion around money, necessitates role analysis (fans/players/owners)
Then there's NFLPA talk (which I, admittingly, will often inject with my own politics), there's stadium construction, etc.
The issue never is politics, it is the manner in which the discussion is had, and I've learned on this forum a valuable skill: you can still extract good discussion, even with someone who is being an ass, if you just remain cool and don't give into the rage bait part of a statement. It can be a lot sometimes, but generally the people with some great points on this board aren't great at communicating them when its in form of disagreement. Instead of wasting time, space, and air trying to change that, just take what you wanna take, and move on.
Pro-tip: engage in standing up for your politics off the internet, because it makes disagreements and everything else so much easier to deal with on the internet; you're not so beholden to winning an argument.
