It just occurred to me this morning. Not only did both Duke and the Falcons blow major leads down the stretch, in the final moments, they both blew it in the same way: they both went for the kill shot when they didn't need to. The Falcons tried to score a TD when all they needed was to get a couple of first downs and run out the clock; Duke went for a dunk at the other end of the court to put them up 4 when all they needed to do was wait for the inevitable foul.

That was a really strange sequence at the end.

As it was happening in real time I kept saying 'where is everybody', wondering why the hell nobody was coming back to help with the inbounds play. Even my wife - not a big basketball fan - could not understand why the three other Duke players were so far away in the front court.

Incredibly poor situational awareness.

As bad as Jakobi Meyers against Oakland.

Crappy coaching. Players should have been prepared for the moment. They just needed to hold onto the ball.

Nowhere near as major as what Atlanta did. Not every blown lead is a 28-3 moment.

I disagree with everyone's read here (just like I disagree with most people about Seattle throwing the ball).

At the start of the play there were over 10 seconds left, so the players had clear instructions #1 to avoid a trap (UConn had the possession arrow on their side, so they'd get the ball on any tie-up). #2 was to avoid an early foul because if UConn fouled them with 7 seconds remaining, they'd still have a chance to get the ball and tie up the game if the Duke player only made 1 of 2 free throws.

The other Duke players in the front court were providing outlets which would have ended the game.

Duke's strategy was to pass out of the trap and win the game. This is NOT bad strategy in a case when UConn has the possession arrow.

Now, the poor part of the play on Duke's part is the player panicking and losing his fundamentals. He needed to turn and face to see if he could dribble out or pass over the top. If he knew he had no way to do that after following the fundamental skill he was taught, only then should he have held the ball.

Overall I think Duke's strategy was sound and it was only a moment of panic from a young player (leaving his feet to throw a pass over defenders) that botched what they were trying to do.

Feels good to be a legitimate UConn fan this morning.

(lived right next to Storrs for a bit in the 80s, also why I'm a Whalers/Hurricanes fan)

He needed to fake over the top and execute a 1 handed bounce pass on the left side of the double to the wide open outlet. Not sure if he saw the left side clearly. Players tend to want to jump and go over the top in this current era. Bounce passes are rarer.

Nothing was that bad. Nothing could ever be that bad.

Own goals are probably the only example, but even most of those were with time left on the clock.

Side note: Arizona with a chance to end the "west of Texas" curse, so pulling for that, but I've got a soft spot for UConn since most of my family is in CT.

lets ask tatums opinion..

Absolutely. But you can't even make those decisions unless you turn and face, and he had plenty of time.

Hurricanes!?! I could never. Im part of the old fan base that despises the Hurricanes when they wear the Whaler unis. I'm a Sabres fan now.

Its Duke. There is a choke gene built into the DNA once someone puts those ugly jerseys on.

I liked the Hurley hire when we made it but I had no idea that he would turn it around so quickly. Him calling his shot after that Villanova loss in 2020 with the "People better get us now because it's coming" quote shows how much he believed in what he was doing with the program and the improvement made from his first year to his second. I know pretty much every other fanbase hates Dan Hurley but I love him. He matches (and a lot of times outmatches) the intensity of the fanbase and carries himself with a ****iness and arrogance like a true Nutmegger.

As clutch Duke was with Laettner, Hurley, Hill, etc in the early 90s they are the inverse the last two NCAA tourneys

They were spreading the floor after they got the ball inbounds but they didn't even have to cross mid-court as there were only 10 seconds left to begin with. It was a Chris Webber moment. Even worse, as they would have been shooting free throws at the other end to seal the deal.

STAT OF THE DAY
134-1

The record of NCAA Tournament No. 1 seeds with a 15-point lead at halftime.
It was134-0 until Duke collapsed against UConn on Sunday.
