You could argue that he never leapfrogged Dobbs, but since he was a midseason acquisition, I doubt they felt that was necessary to worry about. He was more of a 2026 consideration. And yet DeVito was never active last year.
crazy to think that Jacoby Brissett has a $9 million cap hit this season with $6 million in dead cap moneyEven before the DeVito extension, I felt Dobbs would not/should not be returning.
To my amateur eyes, Dobbs didn't show much in limited reps or in the preseason.
Had a $4.75m cap number for 2026.

You're Amazing. They released him to open up #11
At least until we draft a rookie, as the most underrated guy for most pats fans is the 3rd string backup QBDidn't need him: it was all about Maye going forward.
For Him to Steal money after putting his name on the dotted line?? Jimmy would probably trip over the pen no thanks.Personally, I'm rooting for completing the circle and bringing back Jimmy G. He was good enough to lead the 4i9ers to the Superbowl, and knows the offense and Josh. Seems like the perfect back up to me. Bottom line, the Pats need to add at LEAST 2 more QB's before camp. You need 4 arms just to get through practice, in August.
Quite the eclectic mix for that jersey. Nice call! They released him to open up #11
Just as suspected when we retained Divito for the amount we did. Bet QB gets drafted late day 3.
I’m sure Jimmy G is going to command too much money, but i agree with the idea in principle.Personally, I'm rooting for completing the circle and bringing back Jimmy G. Someone posted before that he played for under $4MM last season. That sounds eminently reasonable for an experienced back up. Never underestimate the value of the back up QB. Injures are EXPECTED, not just feared. QB's are going to miss games, and if they don't you got damned lucky. You don't want your locker room to think that their season is over if the QB goes down for the season or for a few gamesI’m sure Jimmy G is going to command too much money, but i agree with the idea in principle.
There was a very interesting article posted last September about just how bad some teams are at QB, and what separates the good ones from the bad ones. One interesting finding was that even for all their success, Tom Brady and Brett Favre were never the most senior experienced QB in the building until they turned 30. They always had a 30 year old as a backup. That person was able to show them how to handle being a QB — the type of mental preparation needed, the leadership skills needed, etc.
I wouldn’t exactly call Tommy DeVito a seasoned QB. I understand just how much potential Maye has and how good he already is, but he’s still going to be just 23 years old in training camp. I’d feel a little better with a mentor out there.
I think the upgrade is already in house. Devito was very good as a spot starter for the Giants. He had a couple of decent throws this year. If he was a good stable pony to Drake and helped him from time to time then he was valuable as a backup.
They can upgrade no question.
I agree. I think Devito can be a very competent backup.I think the upgrade is already in house. Devito was very good as a spot starter for the Giants.
He’s the kind of guy who keeps the house from burning down, if you need him to play 2-4 games.
Smart, tough and can be Scout QB and learn. This is a super-interesting pick if it comes to pass.
Kinda tebowish, but his arm's gotten better every year.
And if he shows anything, he might become trade bait.I agree. I think Devito can be a very competent backup.
I see the Cowboys gave Howell $2.5m in guaranteed money. I assume to be their #2Dobbs was always a band aid cause they couldn't have the deluded Milton who thinks he's a superstar in the building.
Everyone won that he didn't actually have to start a game, DeVito is much more of a gamer.
Cole Payton of ND State or Klubnik (?sp) from Clemson.Bet they also draft a guy late.
