Patriots Player Departure Josh Dobbs Being Released

No surprise, we all knew this was coming with the Devito contract.
You don’t want 2 backups with no real upside.
QB late in the draft.
I like Cole Peyton, but he seems to be rising and will go earlier than we should be picking a QB.

And yet DeVito was never active last year.
Kinda nit-picky as he was the emergency 3rd QB so he was pseudo-active. You could argue that he never leapfrogged Dobbs, but since he was a midseason acquisition, I doubt they felt that was necessary to worry about. He was more of a 2026 consideration.

Cutting Dobbs now is the right thing to do - he should get a look in camps. But we signed DeVito for #2 money with the draft coming up

He did his job preparing for games and we thank him for it!

Even before the DeVito extension, I felt Dobbs would not/should not be returning.

To my amateur eyes, Dobbs didn't show much in limited reps or in the preseason.

Had a $4.75m cap number for 2026.

Not many viable choices as veteran free agent options.

Too much money: Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Taysom Hill, Zach Wilson, Tyrod Taylor.

2nd tier veterans (with age & prior APY):
Joe Flacco, 41, $4.25m
Cooper Rush, 33, $3.1m
Jimmy Garoppolo, 35, $3.0m

3rd and 4th tier FA QBs (with previous team):
Feleipe Franks, Falcons; 29, $1.44m
Brandon Allen, Titans; 34, $1.42m
Teddy Bridgewater, Bucs; 34, $1.25m
Jeff Driskel, Washington; 33, $1.25m
Philip Rivers, Colts; 45, $1.25m
Easton Stick, Falcons; 31, $1.17m
Brett Rypien, Vikings; 30, $1.17m
John Wolford, Vikings; 31, $1.17m
Skylar Thompson, Steelers; 29, $1.10m
Clayton Tune, Packers; 27, $1.09m
Emory Jones, Falcons; 26, $840k

crazy to think that Jacoby Brissett has a $9 million cap hit this season with $6 million in dead cap money

Dobbs was always a band aid cause they couldn't have the deluded Milton who thinks he's a superstar in the building.

Everyone won that he didn't actually have to start a game, DeVito is much more of a gamer.

The journey continues.

Personally, I'm rooting for completing the circle and bringing back Jimmy G. He was good enough to lead the 4i9ers to the Superbowl, and knows the offense and Josh. Seems like the perfect back up to me. Bottom line, the Pats need to add at LEAST 2 more QB's before camp. You need 4 arms just to get through practice, in August.
For Him to Steal money after putting his name on the dotted line?? Jimmy would probably trip over the pen no thanks.

They released him to open up #11
Quite the eclectic mix for that jersey. Nice call!
I had forgotten many of the players to wear #11 over the years for the Pats.

1960-61: Butch Songin
1970: Joe Kapp
1973-74: **** Shiner
1983-89: Tony Eason
1991-92: Shawn McCarthy
1993-2001: Drew Bledsoe
2009-20: Julian Edelman
2022-24: Tyquan Thornton
2024: John Parker Romo
2025: Joshua Dobbs

I’m sure Jimmy G is going to command too much money, but i agree with the idea in principle.

There was a very interesting article posted last September about just how bad some teams are at QB, and what separates the good ones from the bad ones. One interesting finding was that even for all their success, Tom Brady and Brett Favre were never the most senior experienced QB in the building until they turned 30. They always had a 30 year old as a backup. That person was able to show them how to handle being a QB — the type of mental preparation needed, the leadership skills needed, etc.

I wouldn’t exactly call Tommy DeVito a seasoned QB. I understand just how much potential Maye has and how good he already is, but he’s still going to be just 23 years old in training camp. I’d feel a little better with a mentor out there.

Edit — here is the article. The bust files: How NFL teams break young quarterbacks

Someone posted before that he played for under $4MM last season. That sounds eminently reasonable for an experienced back up. Never underestimate the value of the back up QB. Injures are EXPECTED, not just feared. QB's are going to miss games, and if they don't you got damned lucky. You don't want your locker room to think that their season is over if the QB goes down for the season or for a few games

He had a couple of decent throws this year. If he was a good stable pony to Drake and helped him from time to time then he was valuable as a backup.

They can upgrade no question.
I think the upgrade is already in house. Devito was very good as a spot starter for the Giants.

He’s the kind of guy who keeps the house from burning down, if you need him to play 2-4 games.

I agree. I think Devito can be a very competent backup.

DeVito is the Future of American Sports. Time to start shopping Drake.

I see the Cowboys gave Howell $2.5m in guaranteed money. I assume to be their #2
