2026 Draft: RT

And so that aligns with prioritizing Jones over Chaisson. But do they want a complement to that as well?

They brought in Chaisson last year knowing he didnt fit that role. I dont think they intended him to play as large of a role as he did, but as a pass rush specialist? Do we still want someone in that role? The draft is a cheaper way to add that type.

But there definitely is no shortage of options in the first 2 rounds, so theyll have their pick.
Well as of right now they're going to have to double dip so one of both?

Rookie tackles are thrown out all the time. Especially 1st rd picks.

You may want to get them year to learn but for a 1st round pick? Just can't afford to waste the year of the contract and no on field production. Especially when you are a team with multiple current holes.

If youre in year 5 of Vrabel with multiple years of building, multiple division championships, multiple playoff runs and are a well oiled machine, you might be able to redshirt your 1st round pick.

The current Patriots arent there. They have 3 or 4 needs for starters and 3 or 4 secondary needs that need addressing. You can't use a premium pick on a position thay isnt a current need, and not play them.

What if Moses plays 17 games of above average football again and wants to play in '27? Tackles have been able to play in their late 30's. His contract would be a steal for '27. Youre creating a meed that isnt there because you think there will be one. Meanwhile ignoring an actual current hole. Is it likely that Moses does that? Probably not. But its possible. And its a hole that can be plugged immediately with a draft pick if not.

Now of course, I have said if we plug many more of the needs in FA and the draft plays out a certain way, you can justify taking a tackle early. If a rookie can provide versatility and truly be the LT and RT backup, it could make sense. Im not closing off the idea. I just dont think that should be the gameplan. If solving the RT of the future is a '27 draft pick, I see no problems.
I'll stick by the idea that tackles are very hard to come by. I'm still haunted by the time we had the 19th pick in the draft and 6 tackles were taken ahead of us, so Belichick traded out because there were no tackles left.

We're feeling the ramifications of that day even now in a variety of ways. So sure, there are other positions of immediate need. But it's been nearly impossible to draft a tackle here in New England.

When was that?

When was that?
2022. Was wrong about the pick, it was 21.
But Ikwonu, Neal, Penning, Cross & Green went before our pick. And Zion Johnson who was a guard. It was reported that Belichick really thought he'd land his lineman and was surprised there was a run on guys. In hindsight, only Neal and Cross panned out & so our guy would've been a bust. But this only highlights the fact that tackles are very hard to come by.
This year they may have a shot at Iheanchor or Miller.

A lot of busts.

I thought that was the year, but the 19 part confused me.

I think Zion Johnson was a more likely target than OT, with Joe Thuney leaving in FA, and the Pats getting jumped by the Jets for AVT in 2021.

Arguments for Jude Bowry as swing OT and potential RT of the future.

Firstly, before I get on to the arguments for Bowry, I want to acknowledge the elephant in the room. He was poor in the Senior Bowl game and there's no getting away from that. However, there are a number of reasoned arguments in his favour.

1. The Boston College connection. Both Doug Marrone and BoB can provide good intel on him.

2. Lance Zierlein, someone I think is a pessimistic grader, grades him as a "good backup with potential to develop into starter". (however, he also says he has "a higher ceiling and a lower floor).

3. A very good athlete. Taking Monroe Freeling as a comparison, Bowry had a better VJ, an identical broad jump but was 4/100s slower on the 10 split. He grades as a 94th percentile OT according to RAS.

4. Long-ish arms. 33.75", so nearly 34" arms.

5. Team captain.

6. Mainly a LT with limited reps at RT (his losses in the Senior Bowl came at RT). We do not have a backup LT currently.

7. I would say his floor is probably Verdarian Lowe, adequate for a swing tackle, but he does have the upside to start at RT in the future. That will depend on coaching.

I was enamored with these 2 from 2024:

Kiran Amegadjie

&

Kingsley Suamataia

Kiran hasn't been able to stay healthy and Kingsley has essentially replaced Thuney.

I was not a Kingsley Suamataia fan. Too slow footed.

I thought Kiran Amegadjie had the tools and athleticism to develop into a starter.

The measurable are great. The Tape not as strong. The Senior Bowl a disaster.
