NFL News NFL to explore playing a game on Wednesday night before Thanksgiving

Share the latest NFL news from around the league here.
Saturdays? That’s college football day. No.

And I like MNF.

Now Thursday games are stupid and very likely increase injuries and decrement the on field product. Lot of those games looked like preseason games this year.
The quality of TNF has risen dramatically over the past couple years.

Every timeslot has its duds. The problem with TNF is that it is on an island. When SNF sucks you still have 10 other games to talk about. When TNF sucks, that’s all we have.

Good point.

I would also say that TNF , by it’s mere design, is an indictment of the NFL’s true commitment to “player safety”.

Viewership has been erratic within the last 10 years. Somehow, the 2017 season had less viewership then 2020. But, the last 3 years has seen increased viewership because it's becoming easily accessible more than ever. You don't need the dreaded DIRECTTV to get every game now. But I do agree it's gotten watered down as it's pretty exhausting seeing the game you want to watch is on another app you have to pay for. I do miss the days it was just CBS/NBC, FOX, ESPN and ABC.

Basketball is completely unwatchable. A 15 point career average guy moving into #2 of scoring the most points in a game is so bad for the NBA. I haven't watched a game in a few years now. That I've actually been able to step away from. NFL is getting there.

Yeah, part of the increase in viewership is accessibility. I live in NC and watch on Sunday Ticket. My HOA doesn't allow satellite dishes. So if DirecTV still had it and they still were not offering it on their streaming service (which they didn't do at least not until the end), I wouldn't be watching the Patriots every Sunday and I would watch far less football than I do now. I couldn't watch the Panthers every Sunday. I don't hate myself enough.

But accessibility will peak at some point. And they will need to keep people watching.

As Ourand surmises, the four international games that flowed back to the NFL as part of the ESPN merger presumably will be included in the new package. The possible (which is more fairly termed “likely”) Thanksgiving Eve game could be part of it, too.

It's a disgrace...the NFL will do anything to make a buck at the cost of players health.

In 20 years they'll be contemplating adding a game the night before the Super Bowl.

Enough already!

There is going to be a point of diminishing returns for the NFL. The product is going to be so watered down that people will eventually stop watching.
Agree. Over saturation, viewing cost, multiple streaming platform aggravation and other changes will eventually lead to a decline in popularity. Probably not for a long time but someday.

Have the 2 losing teams from the conference championship play in some kind of consolation game?

NFL Is considering extending the season from 17 games to 44 regular season ganes. With 6 playoff rounds. The last 2 weeks will be for free agency and the draft. This is all in the name of player safety by the way.

Personally would love to see them play a game on Christmas morning, especially if they can get those cutaway shots of the players' kids opening presents alone.
