A couple of tips for avoiding fake reports, especially on Xitter:

  • Check the number of followers the account has. If it's <1000: probably garbage. The more followers, the more likely it's true.
  • Check the account name. Make sure it's not something like "@AdamSchef4er".
  • Check their other content. A lot of accounts post a lot of nonsense hoping one or two things hit.
  • Check if others are reporting the same/similar news.

Agree with @ctpatsfan77 - it's really, really bad. Like he said, Twitter at least you can kind of tell by double-checking the account. But Facebook is a 100% no-go right now. I was on there a bit ago, and it's rampant, like really horrific. Fake reports, fake quotes, where sites are attributing things that were never said by real people and there are 100s if not thousands of likes, replies, where people fall for it.

This is the worst I've ever seen it, and unless it comes from an actual news outlet on there, or a real site (the URLs are typically a dead giveaway), don't post it.

Thank you. The people who pull that crap are scumbags.
I honestly don't understand how it's permitted. It's absolutely insane, especially the accounts that thrive off of it.

Not just other social media posters, either. We're talking official sources like the team's website.

Don't trust ESPN reporters, either. If you're checking ESPN, check the transactions section for the NFL.

Same with NFL.com.

If you do decide to go with reporters, crosscheck their claims as CT says above.

Read the claim and beware of weasel words. 'Should', 'Could', 'Would', etc, tell you that it's pure speculation.

Been happening forever.

Remember when a Jets fan pulled off the ruse that Bledsoe had been traded back in the late 90's?

I agree completely. Facebook is by far the worst. I use it for marketplace, but any time I click on it there are stories that are total ********. The other day there was a story about how the Patriots lost out on their star receiver when they were unable to re-sign him, The star receiver they lost out on was Jay'lin Polk.

Once again, I agree completely, they should ban the site altogether.

And it's dozens - if not hundreds - of pages doing it. It only used to be a couple, but I scrolled for maybe 3 minutes this morning and it was nothing but BS reports and quotes that were never said. But the number of comments/likes, etc. blows my mind. And casual fans who don't pay attention see it and think stuff happened that hasn't. It's bananas.

Yeah starting Wednesday it will be like Christmas for these guys. I'll be checking and double checking any rumor or bit of news.

It starts today at noon. They don't wait for the contracts to be signed, they go on agreements in principle,

More like 90 minutes from now when legal tampering begins.

I think even ESPN reporters try to get it right. They're not just making ish up out of whole cloth.

One more bullet point, if it suggests we are trading someone who is not even under contract with the team, it probably isn’t happening

So the Pats aren't getting 3 1st rounders for Ja'Marr Chase? Bummer

Nope, instead we are getting 4. And i know this is true because there was a police siren emoji at the beginning

That siren emoji beats a blue checkmark any day, you know it's official when you see that

It's not like anybody can just BUY a blue checkmark! I mean, Twitter has to have some integrity! (this is clearly a joke as I know it's X and I know you can indeed buy the checkmark)
