You seem to confuse a collection of players on the same roster with a team.

A quote from a builder of the Patriots’ dynasties says it well: “It's not about collecting talent, it's about building a team.”
LOL!! Thanks for the laugh!!
The goal is winning Lombardis, not collecting talent.
That's a stupid statement because winning Lombardi's is directly correlated to collecting talent. Sorry not sorry, but you need to collect talent, and an awful lot of it, in order to win Lombardi's.

I can understand people saying Crosby is too expensive (in terms of picks plus money) but you are a total moron if you don't acknowledge he makes this team better.

Talent helps but doesn’t guarantee winning Lombardis. Pretending it does is also stupid.

I’m unconvinced that just because he’s a talented player that makes the team better. It might, it might not. That’s part of the value equation.

Jamie Collins was a really good player, much better than his replacement, but I think that his replacement made the team better than Jamie did.

Not saying that’s true of Crosby. In fact everything I’ve seen or know about Crosby I think he would make the team better. I’m just not convinced it’s enough better to be worth what he would cost. In fact I’m convinced not worth the cost. Hendrickson to me seems a much better value. Last year Hendrickson wasn’t, as a trade. This year as FA I think he would be.

Thing is, it’s not just the value proposition of how good Crosby is and how much he improves the team and how much he costs. It’s how that value stacks up against the available alternatives. FAs will always have a built in structural advantage because you’re not also spending your future by sending draft picks away.

You make some good points, and your scenario is the ideal preferred way to build a perennial contender.

Some things to consider: By the 3rd year of a team the average roster is 75-80% new players. Turnover is huge in the NFL. You have to decide who your top 3-4 guys are that you are going to pay. The better those guys are the better you'll be because the guys around them are going to change dramatically. That's where you want to fill as many as possible with the draft.

If you have to give up a late first round pick (and some other later picks) for a possible all pro level player that will play at that level for the next 3-4 years I think you should seriously consider it. Just don't be Deshaun Watson wrong about it. You can only pick so many all-pro level players to pay but nothing inherently wrong about getting those guys first and then bulding the rest thru draft..
Hi KCSVEN and thanks for your thoughts which I think are valid points. I agree, you realistically need 3-5 elite players (and a bunch of good but not elite players 10-15?). The Patriots have Maye and will likely extend Gonzalez (and people can debate if he's elite and core to a championship or not) and then the question becomes how do you obtain a couple more elite players and how patient are you willing to be. On top of that, I don't think the Patriots have enough quantity of good but not elite players. I don't think the Patriots have a stacked roster. For me, I like

- Keeping premium draft picks
- Drafting stars (hopefully) around the QB
- Extend the ones that hit
- Only trade picks when you are really close to contention and have stacked roster

From what I understand this years draft class is noted for it's talent and depth at Edge Rusher (manxman2601 would have good insight into this). As arguabley an area of need for the Patriots, it would seem now is a good time to draft one (or more) rather than pay twice for Crosby.

I find the McDuffie trade interesting and like it from the Chiefs's perspective. I feel like this is delayed gratification and increases the likelihood of them being good for longer period of time.

Talent doesn't merely "help". It is a necessary and essential component.

Having talent doesn't guarantee winning Lombardi's. But not having talent guarantees you won't.

I'm in the category against trading away high picks for older players, and I wouldn't give up 2 firsts to get Crosby. However I have come to the conclusion that there's a strong likelihood that they will release Barmore in the next week. If that's the case and they can turn Barmore into a trade piece then I can see a scenario where if they could get Crosby for their first and Barmore then it would make sense, especially if they are thinking strongly of using that first on an Edge. In which case they would be getting an All Pro Edge for a first they would have used on an Edge and a player they planned on releasing anyways. But if it cost more than that I wouldn't make the deal.

It’s not a question of him making the team better it’s a question of whether it makes this team better than the players they would draft with the picks they give up plus the players they would add with the cap space makes the team better by a larger margin.

Lack of talent loses them. May I direct you to like a month ago?

Here is one way of looking at it do we want Crosby at 30M, I assume or Mafe at 12M and Oweh at 18M. Personally I would rather go with the latter, and you get to keep the picks.

Or another combo of 15M/15M players. My point is that I think getting good production in 2 areas beats great production out of 1 especially when the roster has holes in multiple spots. Just my opinion
Also distributes your injury risk by 50%.

With the 17 (?18?) game season and Thur night football, there are few players who won’t get injured for then being multiple games out over course of 2 or even 1 season.

"According to recent reports around the league, the sweepstakes for the standout defensive star are coming down to three serious contenders: the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and Los Angeles Rams."

After trading Randy Moss to the Pats, i doubt they ever trade a superstar to NE again

Crosby would have a huge impact on the defense, no doubt. How about a 1 and 4 this year and conditional pick no higher than a 3rd next year. Just spit balling.

I want Pierce badly and not sure they can get both.

Nah, that was a different time with Brady and BB. This is a completely new regime.

Can’t spend our one on both Crosby and Brown. Going to have to pick just one.

Better to keep it, sign both Hendrickson and Pierce, and draft a rookie as well.

Close the thread.
Let's hope Pats don't miss out on signing Johnny Foxboro as QB3

P.S. So many sign the beast threads, so little results. As it ever was.
