Mark Daniels on the fall of Mac Jones

Goff wasn’t a reclamation project.
when you are the #1 overall pick, and your team pays another team to take you off their hands, you are indeed a reclamation project... His fall wasn't as far, but Goff had to learn to stand on his own two feet... learn to play without McVay whispering in his ear all the reads etc...

Amazing that a BB coached team didn't do their homework on a lot of things.

Like on Juju's chronic injury and on Jones himself. A guy who never wanted to be a leader was still our first round QB pick? Woof.

I've never called him Corky for that reason and Triumph is a moron. I've calle him McCorkle and Cork to play off his middle name but that's it.
I don't get the difference... is there something special about "Corky" that I am not privvy to?

His middle name is literally McCorkle... Michael McCorkle Jones... pretty sure its a dig on his name, not a reference to any type of mental disease of defect... least, that how it comes across to me...

I think it’s a dig on his name and the reference is from a character named “Corky” from the 80’s-90’s show “Life Goes On” who has Down syndrome.

There were reports that McVay had to basically read the defense for him during the 15 seconds that helmet communication was still open, because otherwise Goff couldn't do it. How true that was I don't know, but Goff definitely had to prove he was actually a functional QB without McVay, and seemed to do that this year. It will be interesting (if Ben Johnson leaves for a HC gig) to see how Goff looks next year.

ahh, makes sense. Thanks you, did not watch, did not know that.

Pretty obvious BOB was told the team was not bringing him back in 2024 so he looked for and found another job in the college ranks and that's how it was publicly presented.

A freelancing QB and an offense not on the same page... the same trash we saw in 2022. Yikes

They didn’t even tell him he wasn’t in the lineup the last game. That’s cold.
And he compared his situation to Zach Wilson's where that team was upfront with him.

I'm more and more convinced that firing BB now was the right call. 100%.

This also changes my opinion of Zappe a little and I think he too got a raw deal from a worthless offensive team and coaching.

This article pretty much makes everyone look bad. Belichick, Jones, Patricia, a lot of the players, etc. all don't look good in this piece. The only positive from Jones' perspective is that he seems to have learned from his mistakes and might be a better QB going forward.

This article though is strong case that the Pats were desperate in need of a complete reboot from the coaching staff to nearly the entire offense including and probably specifically Jones.

I hope Mac has learned from his mistakes and turns his career around. Doubt it will be here, but I never root for a guy to fail unless they are a complete d-bag.

Obvious he was never the guy. Doesn't have the leadership or temperament. "He wanted to be one of the guys".

Pats/BB should have read this when Jones talked to them before the draft.
Did you not read the rest of the article where blame is split pretty evenly between lack of talent and bad coaching?

But it's anonymous sources so take it with a grain of salt (or no grains).

But Jones didn't?

Honest Question…what’s the “Corky” reference? Guessing it’s pop culture that I’m missing.

There was a TV show years ago about a kid with Downs Syndrome, and apparently the kid being smarter and more likable than Triumph made him jealous, so he’s been using it as an insult for a long time. Which says all you need to know about him. Unfortunately a number of other posters here have embraced it recently, and whether they know it or not it’s a really ****ty thing to do.

Well that’s the reason Triumph has been using it, as he was using it even before Jones came here.

Injury Revelation on Jones: QB Suffered ‘Stinger’ Ahead of Costly Interception in Germany
Ian Logue
While it remains to be seen whether or not Mac Jones' future in New England will continue past this offseason, news about the reason behind one of the most pivotal plays of Jones' terrible 2023 season came to light on Monday.

But I was told that if you just replace Mac with an average QB, we’re a playoff contender?

This part was really telling to me:

As the season went on, Jones was so bothered by the mistakes around him that O’Brien attempted to help the quarterback. Sources said O’Brien’s message to Jones was simple – take solace in the fact that you made the right read and right throw even if the receiver doesn’t run the proper route or catch the pass.

But Jones was taking things to heart, even when he made the right decision and ultimately tried to do too much to correct others’ mistakes. Jones later admitted to a source inside the locker room that he handled it the wrong way.
This is where mental toughness comes into play, and Belichick’s “do-your-job” mantra does as well. The offense around Mac was crap. Brady had years where he had crap too. But Brady was a leader, held his guys accountable, and continued to play within the system. Mac just wants to be one of the guys and doesn’t hold his teammates accountable, and tries to freelance to make things work because he’s getting frustrated. Can’t do that and be successful here. BoB was completely right in his advice, and that Jones didn’t take it shows his weaknesses as the team’s QB.
