Mayo's Intoductory Press Conference

Wow! After reading the last couple pages of this thread I have learned that the guy who just had his first press conference two days ago is already considered a bad hire by some. Tough crowd. Geesh, give the guy a chance, why don't we? This could be a long year on this forum.

I can’t find any who only had 5 years total coaching experience with zero time as a coordinator
Someone always has to be first.

If most people were being honest they would say its a tough position for anyone to enter into. Not so much unlike taking over as the replacement for TB, not including Cam in that. Deep down inside they probably expect similar results to what they have seen out of the replacement at QB.
But, you have to start somewhere, so here we are.

You just said, "Again, if you hire a man to lead the franchise and the only way he can succeed is by getting other people to teach him how to do his job and the right decision, you hired the wrong guy."

It's a relevant question. Again, if you've ever gone into your boss's office and told them about something you felt it was important they know, maybe something that wasn't working and a possible solution, etc. it's essentially the same scenario he spoke about. Having them thank you for the feedback vs them telling you to focus on yourself and go back to your desk are two different things. And I feel like the more successful companies often look for that.

Albeit, there are certainly people who they'll want to take suggestions from, and others who should probably just go back to their desk ...
It’s not the same at all. You are creating a scenario and calling that the only thing that applies.

Let be put it another way.

If you hire a coach and he says I know how I want things done, I will run the ship, and I am accountable. My assistants will report to me and coach the players based upon the direction I give them.
If you hired the right guy you have a good team.

However if you hire a guy who says I want a diverse coaching staff with lots of fresh ideas and I encourage them to want me to do it their way.
You would have to hire a whole staff of incredible assistants to have a good team.

I am already losing interest.

Kraft has a short window, for me, to get it right.

IMO Kraft is more of an issue than BB was.
Agree

He made the decision last offseason, based on whatever he saw from Mayo prior to that, although I think he thought that plan wouldn't come to fruition for at least another season or two. He also preached about the fact one thing that's important to him is promoting from within, and he's preached in the past about continuity. He got both of those things with this hire.

To your point, it was a call he - and I'm assuming Jonathan - made. You're right, I don't know how much collaboration there was beyond that. Although I would say that's probably the case with most owners.
I don’t think it’s about why or how Kraft made the decision it’s about whether it was a good one.

Yes someone has to be the least experienced HC ever. Thats not a good thing to be.

Imagine going in for surgery and finding you have the least experienced surgeon ever.

Just saying, a "diverse" NFL locker room means having more than a couple white guys. A little confused on some of the stances in here.

Just watch the Fox Five clip above. This stuff doesn't happen organically.

Thanks for the not so veiled racist accusation but let me clarify my "true colors" for you: I'm a 100% Ashkenazi Jew who believes that people should be hired 100% based on merit. That would require at least some experience in the position.

There are dozens of white coaches w/ similar experience that have been handed HC jobs, yet I don't see the uproar over them being hired.

LOL, obviously, that's not ideal, but it's the same story. Someone is always going to be someone's first surgery. At the same time, that surgeon has usually worked with another surgeon a while before doing it on their own. And there are some guys who pick it up quickly and become successful, while others take longer to become good at it.

Then there are also others who take a long time and still never become good at it. Just have to trust the process. If he can't do it and the team falters, as Kraft said, they'll find someone else who can get it done.

It is what it is. This day was coming and it's unfortunately now here. Would have been great to get a star name in here with all the experience/accolades, but instead you've got a guy who at least played for, was hired by, and learned from one of the best ever. Just have to give him a chance.

I’m not sure sudden is relevant. I just think that when half the country feels special treatment for certain identities has gone overboard, it’s odd that someone would point out a view that opposes theirs is “embarrassing”.
Lol, not even close. You poor victims. I feel so sorry you've had to endure centuries of discrimination. Maybe you and your ilk would like participation trophies too.

Fair to have an opinion but would you mind sharing why Kraft is more responsible than Bill?

There is an awful lot of horrendous personnel choices and pettiness that led us to the bottom of the barrel. Much of that falls directly at Bill’s feet.

I appreciate and respect Bill a lot but it’s hard to honestly deny his failures lately.

Mayo is going to bring in some Mustard and Relish and Ketchup to the locker room! A well-apportioned burger... I'm hungry now.

The NFL integrated black players before the US military officially did! Sports is meant to be a meritocracy if there ever was one.
The NFL is an organization that has brought unity and equality to black (and all qualified) people, creating more wealth opportunity for many thousands of black players than any other industry per capita, and we're suddenly being told that we should revert back to look at color to provide opportunity?

That is why "woke" is mentioned - because that ideology wants to replace equality with equity.
I mean that's just not accurate. Study after study has shown it. It's slowly getting better.

Yes - "prove to a player you care" that comment stood out to me - not ideal IMO
You must be really old dude.

I wonder how many of you would like being demeaned and cussed at by your bosses in front of your collegues. But hey, these guys are just players there for our entertainment, **** them.

Except it's just a job for them like anyone else. There's no amount of money that warrants treating people like cattle.

FYI, it has been pointed out from the media that Mayo actually rejected the DC title last offseason for his own benefit. Had he taken the title and Bill was still in NE today, Mayo could only leave for a promotion at HC somewhere else.

With that said, Mike Vrabel was a DC for one year then a HC. Mike McDaniel was an OC for one year and was a HC. Mike Tomlin was a DC for one year and became a HC. Arthur Smith was never a OC, yet someone how became a HC. Matt LaFleur was a OC for two years and then jumped to a HC position. Andy Reid had 7-8 years of NFL experience (never a Coordinator) and became a HC. Brian Billick wasn't known as an OC for for 4 years until they landed Randy Moss. He was handed the HC job of the Ravens. This is nothing new.

Bob Kraft is in the building everyday with Mayo, not anonymous internet posters. He holds him a very high regard comparing him to BB which is why we saw the bizarre announcement with Mayo turning down the interview with Carolina and immediately returning to NE.
