Patriots place Ghost on IR

News story (with video): Stephen Gostkowski had been managing a left hip injury, which led to him being placed on IR, and now the search is on for his replacement. dlvr.it/RFN0Q8

LMAO. Statistics be damned, everyone knows AV is the most clutch kicker of all time.

AV’s high leverage kicks:
- 45+ snow kick in divisional round to tie game in last seconds (greatest kick in NFL history)
- Another snow kick to win that game
- 45+ yd kick to win SB
- Another FG to win another SB

Gostkowski’s most high leverage kicks:

- 50 yarder to beat Giants in regular season
- Late FG in Super Bowl to cushion a lead over an inept offensive performance by the Rams

Vini was 1-3 in the Panthers SB, he missed the first 2 kicks of that game and finally made his 3rd to break a tie. He makes either one of the first 2 and the Patriots are kneeling on the ball to close it out

Full context is important when looking at things this way

The Patriots were never in a Superbowl where it came down to Gost, thats not his fault. It also could have been because he made all the kicks he was supposed to make earlier in the game.

He hit that late 4th quarter FG in the SB last year against the Rams that made it a 2 score game and forced the Rams to be more predictable/desperate. We'd have all aged 10 more years on the Rams final drive if they only needed a touchdown to tie it up

All plays are important, not just the one that happens in the last 5 seconds

You selectively forgot the 2 misses he had in the Carolina SB that necessitated the last second FG you DID mention, OR the the 2 clangers that turned the 10-6 Pats into the 8-8 Pats in 99 and effectively ended the Carroll era.
one of those two missed kicks was blocked...

and the second part... so thats a bad thing?

I've always dreamed of seeing the first person who can handle all of the kicking duties on an NFL roster. Imagine what a team would be willing to pay someone who creates a permanent roster spot that most teams don't have
It’s happened before. 70s?
Steve Little did both. I think Russell Erxleben may have too.

Narrowed it down to Kai Forbath and Mike Nugent

The kick against the Giants is in here but his game winners against the Broncos in 2013 OT, KC last year at home, the Cardinals in 2016 to open the season with JG as QB dont get mentioned.

How about the perfectly executed onside kick against the Browns in 2013 that enabled a come back.

Point being there are many signature moments. Who gives a **** who was better. Lets be happy we had two of the greatest kickers in history follow each other.

Yeah it boggles my mind that he is excellent on FGs and average on PATs this year...

True but small sample size. Further out the kick, the more difficult. It would smooth out over time.

I'm not familiar with those players as they were a bit before my time, but now I'll have to search for some game footage of that to watch. I feel like the skill sets align so much that its a bit surprising its not attempted more often in todays game. I don't follow college ball much, but you'd think there would be some examples of that in the smaller colleges

That is an example of a question a "reporter" should ask Belichick instead of the same redundant, dead-end stuff. Once in awhile someone asks a question and gets a home run where Belichick decides to go into a lot of detail about it and genuinely appreciates it on some level. Maybe he would give a fascinating answer, or maybe he'd snort and say he's just focused on <insert next opponent>

I just can’t believe that Vinatieri is playing next Sunday and Gostkowski is not. Two weeks ago AV was set to retire.

Bring in the chick now that AB (the alleged sex assaulter) is gone.

P.S. Nvm, forgot that Bob (i like to pay women to wrap their hands around my Johnson - not you Andy) Kraft is still around.

So I looked it up because it was over 30 years ago.
Both were first round picks (78 and 79). Little was both K and P but he punted as a rookie, did both in year 2 and only K in year 3 for 6 games then was gone. Terrible pick.
Erxleben did both in college but was a P in the nfl but did have 8 FG attempts in 5 years.

Based solely on the bios in the sports hub link, I’m hoping for Elliot Fry over the old bastards.

I have no reason to believe that Harry will be effective. If Develin is healthy, I greatly prefer him to Harry.

We agree that Wynn is the #1 choice for sure.

As for #2, I do actually agree that it is close given how effective a rookie can be in his first year. Thankfully, we have 5 more weeks to make this decision give or take. I think a lot will depend on:

a.) Jakobi Johnson: Will he be able to pick up the offense and earn more reps?

b.) Our TE situation: Will we be able to use one of them as an hybrid type of blocker? I can't see why we can't just use Izzo on obvious running downs.

c.) Our OL situation....if the guys block well up front and open massive holes we have lesser need for a FB.

d.) Our WR situation: Edelman and Gordon are banged up right now....and Gordon could go AWOL at any time. Harry might be a welcome addition in 5-6 weeks.

If Develin's neck injury was bad enough to send him to IR when they already had Harry and Wynn stashed there and Develin is (legitimately) an important part of the offense, he's not coming back this year. They would have kept him over the likes of Jordan Richards.

Sad day. Gost was basically the only kicker I have ever known.

However what is even more sad are the Patriots fans cheering over his injury. You can not like him or whatever, but have some class.

Not liking the injury vibes so far this year....

You lose every shred of credibility if you believe Gostkowski is more clutch than Vinatieri. Please stop yourself. Statistics don’t mean everything. Vinatieri has come through more times in bigger spots than Gostkowski. That’s a fact that can’t be denied.

In a sense, I agree, but that largely comes down to opportunity. Gost made his only playoff game winning attempt - to beat SD in 2006. It wasn't particularly difficult and didn't have the burdens or prestige of Adam's kicks, but that isn't really Gost's fault. Nor are his playoff misses as much of a detriment when you consider that Adam had similar misfires as well.

So Adam absolutely has more cred, but it would be a much stronger argument if Gost had doinked a few high profile attempts.

This explains his erratic kicks this year, how did we not know he was injured ? Hoping for a speedy recovery, he is still one of the best in the NFL and we need him back!
