Well they had the opportunity for a first down on the punt, so in hindsight it was the right move. With all the screw ups in the game though I think it was one of the rare occasions going for it on 4th and inches that deep in your own territory was at least defensible.

Also, with all the talk about touching the guy as he crossed, wasn't there also an opportunity to snap the ball while he was over the line (the long snapper was looking right at him)?
Forcing a offsides is fine. Running a play is different.

I think they could have snapped it. Asleep at the wheel imo

I was initially p*ssed, but when they showed the slow replay, his knee was down before.
It seemed less clear to me but whatever.

I predicted a loss this week. Sadly I was correct. If these 2 teams play in the playoffs I predict a Patriots win for a lot of reasons no matter where the game is. Here they are.

#1 Gronk - The Patriots seemed unwilling to risk Gronk this game. I didn't see them go over the middle with him once. I think the lack of that call was intentional. You can't beat the Jags unless you go for that 20 yard chunk plays with Gronk. They will do it in the playoffs.

#2 Edelman - Edelman makes the whole offense so much better. puts Hogan on the #2 CB and Dorsett on the #3 CB. That makes a huge difference. He changes the way the defense has to play a fair amount.

#3 The Jags won't be better . They were without Fournette. Frankly I think his impact is overrated. They couldn't run on us all that well with him and they couldn't without him. He is not the RB we need to worry about. We need to worry about the RBs who catch passes. Any down Fournette is in over one of those guys is actually better for the Patriots honestly. That sounds like an odd thing to say, but it's true.

#4 The D will be better - Flowers and Chung leaving the game hurt. Bentley has room to improve. Rowe will have a better day then this.

#5 Injuries - I never wish injuries on a team (maybe a few truly scumbag players). But I am a man who believes that things balance out in the the long run. The Jags were virtually injury free last year with every key player on defense. I don't believe they reach the end of the year entirely intact. That simply goes against the laws of probability.

#6 The Jags won't play this well again - Their OL was amazing. Bortles made a lot of very good passes. Their WRs made insane catches. basically we got their A game. It is unlikely we will need to face it two time in a row.

#7 The Pats held a lot back - I don't think the Jags showed everything they had, but it was clear the Patriots weren't interested in showing anything. They held a lot of plays in reserve. They didn't even go hurry up much I think which was surprising.

I know it is early but i am calling it now. If these 2 teams play again the Pats win.

Do you have any concept of draft position and salary cap? Patriots have drafted in the bottom 5 for the past 18 years not counting the 2 first rounders stolen from them. They also have to be within salary cap restraints. So what do you propose they do?

Don’t give me that crap. Bill has dropped the ball drafting especially defensively. You have to try and hit with some of these guys in the second round and after and he hasn’tThat’s you making excuses for the poor drafting. If you keep failing then you go out and get a playmaker defensively. The guy’s a great coach but to me he has always been overrated when it comes to defense.

Are you serious? You think BB is purposely ****ing up in the draft

It also won't be 100 degrees. I believe they showed a stat that Brady was like 1-4 or 1-5 when the temperature is over 88 degrees.

So basically Brady has a better record when down 18+ points(another in game graphic) at the half then when the game temp is over 88 degrees :D

Mike Lloyko stated that the Patriots will have to spend a bundle on defense in upcoming years: two safetys, a cornerback, multiple linebackers, two defensive
tackles.
Next year, use some of their numerous draft picks: one #1, two #2s, and three #3
to fill some of these needs. Stop trading for other teams discards on one year
contracts.

Three defensive thoughts come to mind:

  • Hightower is a growing concern. You wonder if all the injuries have taken a hit to his athleticism. That would be a problem.
  • Considering how good J.C. Jackson was in camp & the preseason, how many opportunities will Rowe/J. McCourty get at CB.
  • I’m lost at the EDGE rusher snap counts. Grissom over Rivers as well as K. Davis playing so much the first two weeks. Wonder what the season long plan is there.

What struck me today was how bad the coaching was. They were completely unprepared.

Play calling was atrocious and they just gave up at the end of the game.

It’s not often I’ve thought or said this in the Belichick era, but the coaching sucked today. Considering the Super Bowl performance, it’s becoming a disturbing trend.

Edelman will make the offense better but i still wonder about this team and their inability to beat man coverage. The defense will get better but it did last year only to realed it’s ugly head in the playoffs. This d line has been dissapointing to say the least. Rivers can’t see any burn. Clayborn is a jag.

Were seeing the result of 4 years of poor drafting on defense.

I would at least like to see what we have in Rivers some point this season.

I think a lot of that had to do with a very simple game play. They did call a number of blitz plays but they were very telegraphed. Basically the play was play man to man and try to beat them.

I think punting on 4th and inches when you are down with one of the best Sneak QBs ever was a mistake. That is ****y football. I dont care about percentages. You dont give the other team the ball when YOU are gaining the momentum with your gassed d
