NE trades for WR/KR Patterson !

His stats (large RAC, small YPC) suggests he only really catches bubble screens and stuff out of the backfield. That explains the high catch rate. It's not like he's pulling balls down in traffic like Danny A.

A guy that was drafted by the Vikings, then signed with Oakland and gets traded to New England after one year there...seems familiar;)
Not only that, I seem to remember another fast wide receiver out of Tennessee who had a pretty good career with the Patriots.

Live in Minneapolis, very exposed to Vikings. Thoughts:

*He deserves a lot of credit for keeping his head up and working hard after he failed at becoming a featured player in the Minnesota offense, and eventually became a very good gunner in addition to an elite return man. He has never missed a game, is a generally happy guy and good team player.

*This is the best kick returner they have had in the Belichick era, with all praise due to Bethel Johnson, Ellis Hobbs, and Dion Lewis. He is electric on kickoffs.

*Does not run routes well. Should (and almost certainly will) be used only in very specific ways in the passing game. He is a threat as an occasional tailback, often motioned into the backfield from an empty set.

*Has the potential to fill a number of roles -- kick return, gunner/special teams, occasional receiver and occasional running back. I think he makes the team, and I believe it unlikely that Matthew Slater returns.

Not many people, myself included, thought that Matt Light was a ready-made LT either, but unless Bill trades for one, what other choice do we have but to draft a LT, perhaps as early as 43, and pray that it all works out?
Ron Borges certainly didn't. :)

He has a lot of position flexibility. He can run out of the backfield on sweeps and such. Averages 10 yards per carry on those kinds of plays. We will find a way to use him. He isn't like any other player on our team or really anyone we've had recently. It's hard to say whose position he will take because we value ST so heavily.

I dont really see the flexibility you are talking about. The problem is that his subpar route running makes no other team take him serious as a normal receiving threat. Him on the field is a give away for some trick play happening (or being set up for later).

He needs to become competent in at least a limited route tree to become an effective weapon on offense. Otherwise he will be the new motion guy that fakes a sweep a couple of times setting up the real sweep at some point in the game.

Anyone knows if he is at least a competent blocker ?

It’s certainly looking less likely but I wouldn’t rule it out. This team had no KR so I think this acquisition was about that more than a straight up Slater replacement. But if he can do both then you could well be right.
Yeah, I knew he was a bad mamma jamma at PR/KR, but had no idea he was a gunner as well. He’s young, explosive, All-Pro, BB had his eyes on him for a while, can be utilized all over the field & a gunner????? Slater might as well be Screech :D

Jk jk...I love Slater. He’s meant a hell of a lot to this team/organization, but with BB....

Thanks for the inside scoop. Are there any plans for you and the rest of the Patriots brass to beef up the offensive line?
Really man
It's possible this was a reaction vs action but part of me thinks the Patriots wanted more ecpolosiveness in that spot all along

The more I watch videos of him the more I wonder about his potential as a HB. In the good old Hernandez role..

Having this guy as our kick off returner is huge. Any additional field position we get just makes our offense that much more deadly.

Plus I guantantee bb is going to find ways to get th ball in his hands in space. He is that dynamic a player.

Great move by us.

Exactly. YAC plays

I only see his numbers going up with Brady and McDanny.

Halfback or H-back? (not necessarily a stupid question because Hernandez lined up as a shotgun RB sometimes, and Patterson has good running skills)
