So much for Jets fans being thrilled by the pick... the Jets actually wanted two players a lot more:

The New York Jets selected linebacker/defensive end Vernon Gholston with the sixth pick in the 2008 draft.

As it turns out, however, Gholston was the Jets’ Plan C.

The Jets initially wanted to jump up to No. 2 to get defensive end Chris Long, according to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News. But when a deal couldn’t be struck, the Jets opted to focus on running back Darren McFadden.

And when the Raiders picked McFadden, then Gholston became the focus.

The effort to move to No. 2 went nowhere because the price that the Rams put on the transaction was “exorbitant.”

Now they're stuck with the guy who dogs it instead.

Rejoice.

And we know that Baltimore tried like mad to get that pick, too...

An interesting thing to keep in mind next time somebody claims that the crazy salaries make the top 5 picks undesirable and practically impossible to trade down from.

Re: Gholston actually Jets third option

I would hate it if my war room leaked out who i wanted after I had to resort to plan C. I like how BB keeps a tight organization and media has to guess what he is thinking.

Getting the guy you value 3rd most in the draft at pick #6 is pretty damn good.

Now we'll just have to see if their evaluation of Gholston in which they ranked him 3rd on their board is correct, but this is hardly terrible news for Jets fans.

KC said that we were after their pick but they wouldn't trade it. In other words, there was someone we wanted bad enough to trade up and I doubt it was Mayo.

I guess my point is that the fact that the Jets targeted another player (or 2) over Gholston, does not mean that they aren't happy with the pick.

Only one team picks #1 overall, so most teams end up with a player who isn't their first choice.

Re: Gholston actually Jets third option

IIRC, Seymour didn't produce a lot in college, and there were doubts about Warren's effort.

That's why the media hates him/us.

Re: Gholston actually Jets third option

I also would have tried to trade up for Chris Long, as he is the safer pick, and I believe he's an All-Pro in the making. He looked more fluid than Gholston, too.

So, it seems the "inside" source who claimed Gholston was more attractive to 34 teams was talking out of his/her ass. Actually, we already knew that supposed "insider" was feeding us BS, since Reiss claims the Patriots weren't even interested in Ellis, and they didn't believe he was a good fit for their defense.

The first poster on the Jets message board thread (Jets poster from the link) said that the Jets ruined the Pats draft because NE was looking to trade up. So I guess the Jets draft was ruined

Seriously though, there's no shame if the two guys you want get taken before you pick, and you can't trade up because it's too pricey. What's the big deal?

In which leagues?

Oh, you mean 3-4 teams. Got it.

Re: Gholston actually Jets third option

Interesting - as I pointed out before, if not for the Patriots 16-0 season, the Jets likely would have been picking #3 instead of #6.

In which case they would have had their Plan A instead of their Plan C.

That being said, Gholston could be a monster - but we also know he could be a bust as well.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed a) he was full of Sh*t b) he ghosted as soon as the draft came around

Re: Gholston actually Jets third option

There's no way the Jets would take DMC over Gholston. Gholston was not going to get to the 7th slot in this draft, it just wasn't going to happen.

Yes, and the Pats were going to pick Mayo had they had the first pick in the draft instead of the 7th.

That's how I see it, also. If the Pats had the first pick in the draft, I doubt that Mayo would have been the pick. I'm very happy with him, but given the choice would take Dorsey or either of the two Longs.
