Per The Athletic Seahags have signed Witherspoon, Gonzo next?

So match the Will Anderson deal and give him 50 million per?
I'd think about it.
It won't be that much.

I love how no one's talking about how much Witherspoon's getting paid though, even in national media (other than 'Highest paid WR and CB') Nice player, but he can't hold Gonzalez' jock. He's now supplanted Trent McDuffie as the Kirk Cousins of cornerbacks.

I'm fine with making Gonzalez the highest paid CB in football, and I'm fine with giving him a big chunk of it guaranteed, but I wouldn't give him 40 per, or a clause that escalates the deal as the cap goes up. Imo the only CB in football as good as Gonzalez is Surtain.

I think the team's giving out mega deals like the JSN deal are foolish, and I'm really surprised the Seahawks did that deal, although like the Texans they have a little more leeway because their QB's are never going to get deals like Mahomes, Allen, and the one Maye is going to get. Darnold and Stroud simply aren't in that category, which frees some space to sign Anderson et al. Other than that I think teams are going to have to draw a hard line with their top players who want " QB" money, and be willing to trade them if need be. And the best team's are going have to be great at drafting and developing players to stay on top, because you can't pay 3-4 guys 60-70% of your cap and be competitive, so you will be letting quite a few good players walk. To offset that I would like to see the league upgrade the quality of picks for losing free agents, even to the level of an extra 1st round pick if one of your player's, like a Gonzalez, signs for " QB" money elsewhere.

Or at PFT. Yep, just a guy trying to time it so he can say he was first. Disappointing, but I don't think he's too far off. My guess is Monday before they go on the practice field

I don't think it's a guy trying to time it, I think it's an ******* trying to get clicks. There are a bunch of these fake ******** sites now that make **** up and then put it out there like it's news, when in fact it's complete and utter ********, and they know that. Just yesterday I saw one that said Pats Make Huge Move, Sign Former #1Overall Pick, and then claimed Rappaport said they had just signed Jadaveon Coowney, who signed with Houston weeks ago. Unfortunately social media doesn't care if it's true or lies, it all just goes out as if it's real, when at least 90% of it is completely made up. As I said to someone else here we should have stickied thread for the Lying Liars that outs these sites for the ******** liars they are.

Pat Surtain is what Gonzalez is trying to make a case for. Surtain just signed his deal less than two years ago, yet Witherspoon has already obliterated it which he has no business doing. McDuffie has also been meh since 2023.

This is the exact problem I've been seeing with these contracts for years.

I hate those sites. We should have a permanent thread here dedicated to calling out all of those ****ty lying sites.
Any member of this forum who posts one of those disreputable sites here...

By the end of this season Gonzalez will have been paid somewhat north of $15 million. He should be set for life already if he’s been careful with it. But he’d have to be frugal to live the rest of his life on just those savings. The next signing bonus will be the life changing money, where he will no longer need to be frugal.

Even with 15 million in a mixed/safe portfolio you getting around 7% ROI. Thats a little over a million a year. If you can’t live off a million, you are a fool. Gronk and Ocho Cinco and Marshawn Lynch need to be the advisors to these young kids. Quite frankly if I ran a hedge fund, I would hire them and give them a division to recruit players. This doesn’t even take in consideration, sponsorship and endorsement money.

Kind of like Felger and Mazz.

Agreed. Our old friend Logan Ryan could also be utilized as wise counsel for both young & older players.

I saw that. Was going to post it in this thread but you nailed it first. Kudos.

Thing is, it’s not really as simple as it sounds. For example I figure Gonzo has been paid $15 million which means he got at most half of that, after taxes, agents, expenses. But as Ryan points out, the portfolio investment options are very broad for that kind of bankroll. When I was designing portfolios for clients for a living I was expecting upwards of 10% on a fairly vanilla mix of equity and debt based products, balanced and not taking on crazy risk. Ryan appears to have likely invested in real estate, and there are some other good income producing alternatives. I once passed on a limited partnership investing in Hollywood productions, partly because the synopsis they provided for one production seemed ridiculous: a detective story mixing cartoon and live action characters seemed hokey. It still hurts every time I think of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. Point is, it takes money to make money, but once you have money it’s easy to use it to make more money. Key is not going crazy and throwing it around like water.

The Seattle Seahawks have locked up another young star, agreeing to a four-year, $132 million extension Saturday with cornerback Devon Witherspoon, according to league sources with knowledge of the deal, but weren’t authorized to speak publicly.

The deal will make Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
Yeah but about what we expected. Gonzo's will come in at or just above it.

It will be interesting what we see for guaranteed and non-guaranteed.

Kraft's statement is meaningless absent an agreement on guarantees. I mean, $160M over four years with no guarantees would make Gonzalez the highest paid corner, right?
Right - my prediction is Gonzo will have the overall claim as top paid (at least until the next CB contract) but Witherspoon will have more guaranteed.

$101 guaranteed is a LOT!

Sauce Gardner had the title for a bit but he only effectively got $70 million guaranteed over 3 years. That's some big time inflation to $101 million.

We have to pay attention to the % of cap.

That's the most important thing. For the top CBs, it's average 7-8% though in some years it's 12-14% when the contracts are backloaded, but the average even for the top has been about 8%.

The only exception is Revis's 3rd contract where he signed for 3 years and 12% for the Jets. But they are the Jets.

I checked all the top CB's and they are all below 10% of the cap.
