OT: The 2026 World Cup Thread

Not for one second did I think the U.S. was winning the World Cup, but I sure thought they could have made it to the round of 8.

Well that was a fun distraction to get us through some of the dog days, but all I really care about is 54 days to (college) kickoff, 65 days to Pats kickoff.

Who do I call to get those two hours of my life back?
It could be worse, you could have got up at 2am and not been able to drink a beer cause it’s the middle of night and then watch the homies get thrashed…..like me.

Team USA had some good moments in tournament. Not so much in this game. 3d goal in particular was pretty cheap/ piss poor.

Say goodnight Gracie, I’m out

Belgium enjoying the last word…

Yeah, I was on the verge of buying the hype against my better judgment. A difficult sport for me to get excited about, I'm sure the passion draws primarily from being born into it.

I did enjoy England's gutsy effort at altitude in a hostile environment vs. Mexico last night. I'll probably tune in again here and there, we'll see.

from now til yhe final on paper every game should be quality
minus the Argentina game they get fucjing Egypt

Well that was a dud. US has a maddening habit of giving sketchy goals early in big games. And the second goal simply cannot happen. That cross has to be covered. That was the game right there. I won’t blame Freese for the loss, but to me looked shaky all tournament. Judgement on coming off his line looked hesitant and uncertain and at times simply bad. Being a keeper in MLS is not helping him. There was plenty of good in the tournament, too bad the final act was a disaster.

Excellent video collage. What's your connection to Norway? Also curious what it cost you to get in.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. No real connection to Norway. As a season ticket holder of the New England Revolution they gave us an opportunity to buy some tickets and the Norway-Iraq game happened to be the cheapest....though I was intrigued by this matchup given some big names on Norway. As a general soccer fan I felt I had to try to at least get to one World Cup game (and it was quite the experience). I enjoy the Revs but the atmosphere was on a complete other level. Ultimately I got a nosebleed ticket for $260 and never actually went to my seat.

I’ll still watch every game, although I have to say the last 2am one tonight I may skip the first 45+.

I‘m not a big soccer (Fußball here) fan. But I love the national tournaments : Euro & World cups.

The year Germany hosted we had a big screen open air setup in neighboring town sponsored by the SAP corporate HQ. Was also one country used the town as their base camp. It was awesome experience with German bier, food, at the marketplace with beer table service (~2500 pax, mostly with sun -rain cover, but weather was 90% obliging). and they had bands playing in between matches. We rode our bikes the 5 km almost daily.

I was in Germany when they won in 1990. Stayed up late with my future wife watching Germany beat Argentina IN ROME. I had to be at Army sport at 0600, so I’m like….Congrats, let’s go to bed. She’s like…ARE YOU NUTS. We are going downtown. So I humor her after saying…We are in farm-hub Bamberg, 800 miles from Rome in one direction and 400 from Berlin in the other. What could be going on here. ….suffice to say “Everything”. The cops directed us to park in the middle of a 4-lane a 1/2 Mike from ped-zone ( against traffic direction- bumper to bumper). We walked from there and was wall-wall people for the 3/4 Mike long ped zone, all the river bridges etc. fireworks overhead and the party didn’t stop til like 4am. Went to P.T straight from getting home, still semi-drunk on champagne handed around in street. Would be nice to be young and dumb again, body can’t take that anymore. Lol

It's a huge win for England. Mexico are a good team and were in excellent form. It is also so difficult to win in one of the host's own stadiums, against the crowd, at altitude. Then getting a red card and playing with 10 men for what turned out to be 40 minutes. Previous England teams usually wilt against that type of pressure.

I'm also still slightly in shock still that they had the confidence to just park the bus with 25 minutes still to play with injury time, even taking Kane off, basically saying we know you can't score. Seemed conplete madness to me at the time.
Soccer is huge here and I know a lot of diehard Mexico fans. They have been going to an area here called the "Power and Light district" to congregate en masse and support Mexico. The place has been packed.

So close and yet so far. Same as the USA.

The soccer guy that I was listening to on Sports radio also mentioned that the USA goal keeper really hadnt been tested yet.

That proved true.

Thierry Henry knows his stuff. He mentioned that the USA struggles vs European teams.

Felt like a Dynasty era Pats game when NE just waited around for the opposition to puke all over itself....and then capitalize on the errors.
Play a quality team (finally), get exposed.

Yes, it’s been a great WC, and attendees have only good things to say about the Hosts, the people.
Unfortunately Trump is doing his best to kill all the good will that’s been built from real
life experience of the foreign fans.
Right. Trump isn't America. We the people are. And the WC players and fans are seeing the truth. Not the mediot version.

Seems like ordinary Europeans and others coming here are having a mighty fine time and looking upon the US quite favorably
Just like my daughter-in-law from Beijing. All it took for her to bring our son back home after 15 years in Asia was one visit to this country.

LFG USA!!!

Win the World Cup in a sport we don’t even give a ahit about!
I still don't care for it but Soccer has moved ahead of hockey in this country.

A huge hurdle for soccer is that every World Championship occurs every 4 years.

That wont fly in the USA.

Eh, I wouldn’t plan on the excitement of something that happens once every 30 years or so translating into huge viewership for soccer in the U.S. once things return to normal.
