Celtics 2026-2027 Discussion

George is 36. When he is 37, George decides if wants one year at $57M, or if he has a good year with the Celtics, might a team offer him three more years at $25M per year? That is value. One year at $57M, and then try to find a contract at 38, or maybe three years at $75M.
Given his recent health issues, it's less likely he'll be playing into his 40s like LeBron and MORE likely that the Celtics may be able to flip him for a younger, better - though possibly disgruntled - player in the same salary bracket with a longer term contract

That allows the other team to jettison some cap space and get the benefit of George's expiring contract

Who that might be? Look at a current list of contracts in that bracket that go longer than George's, look at the team's cap situation, and go from there

But I think that's going to be his main value to us - but we shall see

Maybe they'll resign Anfernee Simons for about $6 million

Oops - too late, the Sixer grabbed him too

These are all really good additions for the Sixers

The Sixers are also targeting LeBron James.

Why are these good moves for the Sixers? They’re just trying to sign every player based on their name recognition with the idea that you build a team by getting as many stars as possible. I don’t even see where Brown fits into this team given that Maxey is the offense with his dribbling and scoring, while Embiid is the team when he is healthy. That’s why George actually did fit in well when he actually played since he’s a very good passer and mover in addition to his shooting.

The Sixers look like they’re building a basketball team straight out of 2003. I can’t remember the last time any team made a deep playoff run when they’ve been constructed like this. Just conglomerate a bunch of veterans without regard to their style of play. And giving away future pics in the process.

Can criticize the Sixers but they still look better for the foreseeable future. Also, did the playoffs mean nothing kicking out the C’s?

Celtics looked built to compete for years to come if they maintained the core and worked around it following their title. Now it looks like they’ll just be a second fiddle in the East at best until they make more strides in the next 2-3 years. That’s being optimistic. They are no longer a contender and haven’t been since Tatum went down. Hopefully they can get back there to being a legit threat.

Brandon Ingram or Michael Porter Jr.?

Let's hope one year from now you're right and everyone is talking about how Brad duped the Sixers into signing two washed up players from the 2025-26 Celtics roster

As I have stated several times, the status quo was untenable.

The vast majority of people - even those not happy with the trade - agree.

What did you, like, take a poll or something?

There was No Reason to trade him Now.

Because Brown's 2 year, $142M extension window is July 26th to October 19th. If they don't sign him for an extra $71M a year for 2 years in the next 3 months, he will play out his existing contract and they get even less value.

If the Celtics pay P George for 1 year (and lose Brown's services), they get two 1st round draft picks. They thought these two extra 1st round picks were worth it. I am not sure if that is good value or not, probably depends on where they end up drafting and who they draft.

Then let him play out his existing contract.

Nobody is offering this broken-down has-been a 3-year contract after his current one expires... in 2 years.

Why? To lose in the playoffs over and over?

It is like the 9-8 Steelers who always have a draft pick about #20. They never get over the hump. You have to change and usually go backwards initially.

Isn’t that exactly what we are doing? I don’t see any capital (player-wise) that could yield us a star player to match with Tatum without gutting our roster of promising role players. We also don’t have any high draft picks sitting in the pipeline.

If you want real change in basketball it comes with tearing it down and accumulating valuable draft capital. We took a big step back without any indication that it will ultimately help us in the future. Yeah it will save money, thats wonderful. What player will that lead us to?

Never the less I’m happy for Bill Chisholm that finances will be in order.

I agree but think the Celtics are restructuring differently than you might be thinking. But I could be wrong in interpreting your post.

I don't think the Celtics are looking for a star player to replace Jaylen. Tatum plus a star player is not their thinking. I am guessing the Celtics want to follow the Knicks model. KAT is at the max of $57M and then Anunoby is at $42.5M, Brunson is at $38M, Bridges is at $32M, as opposed to two max players. Brown is up for an extension this year at $71M. The Celtics want to sign two guys at $35M instead of one at $71M (plus Tatum).

The Celts can trade P George as an expiring contract next year (2027/2028) for a $40M-ish contract (upper mid level), or let George's contract expire in 2028. So the Celts can add two mid-level FAs plus a high 1st round pick in the summer of 2028. The Celts are guessing that the Clippers complete their rebuild in 2028 so their 1st round pick, following the 2027 season, is a lottery pick. I think the Celtics see Gonzalez and Scheierman as long-term plus players by 2028. Also the Celts can go over the salary cap after staying below for a few years. That is the restructure.

If that is not Brad's idea, then I am lost. J Brown was obviously not valued around the league. At 30 years old, Brown has peaked at 34% from 3 which does not justify $71M a year.

The Sixers are likely to have better short term gains than the Celtics. It will be hard for the Celtics to really win this trade immediately given that they don’t even have those draft picks for a while.

I just think for the Sixers this is a trade that you make if you feel you’re on the verge of a championship. I don’t think they are, but of course I’ve been wrong. I thought that the Knicks did the same thing giving up so many picks for Bridges and the questionable play of KAT. So I guess we will see.

Fair enough. If that is the grand plan it’s understandable. The problem is it’s hard to say whether there was really any plan at all aside from get Brown off the books.

Pardon my skepticism but it feels like the marching orders are coming from above not with Brad or any kind of plan such as the one you laid out.

Who knows for sure? I am guessing based on believing they have winning at heart. Could be wrong.
