OT: The 2026 World Cup Thread

The NFL got very popular in the UK in the 1980s through a deal with Channel 4 (the second commercial channel in the UK then, with a mandate to explore "alternatives"). They hit on a formula of showing highlights and a "game of the week" on a Monday night, which was one of the Sunday games, compressed to, if I recall, about an hour or an hour and a half -- so all of the plays but none of the endless time-outs. It was a great formula and there wasn't extensive press or TV coverage so people didn't already know the results. A lot of now-older people got hooked then.

Then the NFL sold rights to Mr Murdoch's pay-for-sports channel and he live-streamed US broadcasts, so the fan base didn't grow. Anyway, the UK already has a violent winter sport (rugby) which Germany doesn't.

Hard to write about this WC without politics, that's for sure!

But even leaving all of the shenanigans and corruption aside, my heart sinks at the prospect: games played in an unsuitable climate at an unsuitable time of year at unsuitable times of day in stadia that haven't been properly prepared for football. The 1994 U.S. World Cup was possibly the worst ever and, with the inclusion of a ton of teams that should never have been allowed to take part, I anticipate that the games will be even lower in quality.

I might get involved once it's going, especially since I think I'm going to be in Germany for a lot of it, and they get pretty excited during World Cups (outdoor viewing at the Fanmeile and so on). And perhaps some outside team will win my heart -- maybe Morocco or Japan or Sweden. Till then, I will just hope that the cheats, simulators and divers all lose. (No chance!)
Wait, WHAAT?!
Your'e not rooting for England?
-scratches head-

Just realised that Scotland are playing Haiti at Gillette Stadium tonight. Its a 2 am kick off here in Scotland so I for one will not be watching and will wait for the highlights tomorrow am.

It is a must win for the Scots or we may as well give up

Diving is a big problem in world football. I had my ankle broken in two places playing soccer and believe me you don't roll around on the ground like you were shot. Player's faking injury should be sent off.
The funniest episode that I have ever seen was a year or 2 ago. This player goes down and the Ref and his teammates are all around him laying on the field. One of his teammates motions to bring the stretcher out. Before the stretcher guys can get out there the Ref and other players all walk away. The guy laying there alone suddenly pops up on his feet and runs back to his team.

If they used the same scoring system football games would end up 4-3, 3-1 etc.... They spend most of the game standing around. There's more action in the first 15 minutes of a soccer game than an entire football game.
I like soccer, I think it’s a great sport. But like others have said I hate the way it’s played with all the flopping. Goes directly against the spirit of competition in my mind when you’re trying to get opponents thrown out of the game rather than actually beat them. I also wish there were more scoring opportunities (note: not necessarily more scoring). Hockey has similarly low scores but stats show 15-20 “high danger” (exciting) scoring opportunities per game vs maybe 4 for soccer. I’m sure there’s also a beauty to soccer that I don’t fully pick up on when I watch but those are some of things that prevent me from getting more into the game.

While most of you have nothing look forward to for July, us real football lovers come together again to celebrate the biggest sport spetacle of the world

World Cup babyyy

And this time is being held in your (well most of "your") home country. And Mexico. And Canada. Do you think the USMNT has any chance of going far? Pulisic will have to work extra time to carry you all.

I think, of all teams, Portugal is my pick. I just love their midfield. Spain, France and (homer-take) Brazil come next

Whilst as a Brazilian I can't contain my excitement for when it comes around, this world cup has had already many strange things occurring:

-the US barred from entry Africa's best referee.
-Senegal's national team was stripped while arriving at airport.
-Iraq has to land, play and depart from games in US soil in 24 hours.
-International supporters having a hard time coming to support their team, making some games still being empty. For the World Cup.

48 teams for first time. Kinda cool to see Cape Verde, Curaçau and Uzebekistan in the tourney. They really shouldn't be playing the World Cup, though.

It is a bit funny that after Russia hosted the games, then Qatar, it is the US who has least "freedom" optics, but hey, it is 2026, we are all living in a dystopian reality.

As of now, Mexico and South Africa are playing, to begin the show.

Are you excited for it? Because it is being held in the US, are some of you more interested in the games?

Let's get this **** going. VEM HEXA
nope, not interested. I prefer hand eye coordination sports. I've tried to accept soccer, but so boring to me. The extra time crap and no clock count down baffles me. Have a damn clock count down that everyone can see..

I wasn’t sure which venue
Yes, but your buddies Son is in GA and seeing Spain play.

I assume the game is downtown where GT is located.
I looked it up, the Atlanta venue is Mercedes-Benz Satdium.

WTF is all this about you people needing a license to watch TV??

Germans require you to take a test to get a license to be ALLOWED to FISH!!! Try that one on for size & try to top it.

Are all the private parking lots at Gillette operating like normal? I just bought tickets to the England-Ghana game.

I’m a huge soccer fan (also rugby, Aussie rules and football).

They have the tech to end flopping right now. Just review game tape after the fact. Issue multiple game suspensions for no contact flops and 1 game suspensions if there is contact but the flop is exaggerated (as in there is a judgement to be made). This would end the practice immediately.

My god we were brutal but when you're Scotland at a World Cup you'll take any win you can get.
They will have to play much better to get any points from Morocco or Brazil

The BBC is a publicly-funded service with no advertising so the licence fee is a dedicated tax to pay for it. What's so strange about that?

Bro... we are Americans... we think anything different is strange...

We will tell you we dont know **** about the metric system and then can tell you any caliber and ammo in metric to a t.

It bothers us that a TV could be "taxed" up front so to speak.

Its like the tipping culture vs non tipping...

Our states fund our public broadcasting with state money and federal(national) money... most programs are made with grants and funds from mega donors.

Then we have donation drives and gift give aways to keep local networks on the air.
They ask you to donate used cars... etc. To help out.

You guys just do it upfront.... but with everyone paying the fee up front... it eliminates the need for all the other stuff we do...

The only thing I like better about our public system is that you have so many stations in different states(at least back in the day) you got people like Bob Ross... Mister Rogers... a lot of organically grown talent...

However, the BBC produce much more polished and refined shows... as well as produces fine quality films and series as well... not just for themselves but other networks like HBO.

"Rome" which in my opinion was one of the finest shows ever made (top 10 for me easily) was produced by the BBC...

Unfortunately for the BBC they rushed the ending of Rome... (they were tired of producing such an expensive show.)

This gave HBO a pause for a partnership with the BBC again...

The next big show was Game of Thrones... which HBO handed directly to Sky.

Oof!

Tldr:
A TV loiscense is foreign to us!

Yes. I know. Lots of taxes are levied in ways that at least make them look as though you are paying for a service -- Americans are used to having to pay a fee for Street Parking. But I don't come here to talk about politics.
