PATRIOTS NEWS Mandatory Minicamp 6/9-11

Breaking New England Patriots Team News

Very animated final minicamp practice of the Patriots’ offseason workout program. Lots of red zone work.Drake Maye: 10/20, Tommy DeVito: 5/11, Behren Morton: 3/9TDs: A.J. Brown x2, Efton Chism, Jeremiah Webb, Maye scramble, Eli Raridon, Tanner Arkin, Kyle Williams, Jimmy Kibble, Hunter Henry

minicamp 3 notes:- Got out most competitive day of the spring with both sides making plays. Drake Maye threw TDs to AJ Brown (2x), Eli Raridon, and TreVeyon Henderson. Came close to to Hunter Henry and Romeo Doubs - Play of the day for me was a late adjustment from Brown in the corner of the EZ on what looked like a miscommunication between Craig Woodson and Kobee Minor- Morgan Moses was present but didn’t participate, so Calen Lomu remained the top RT. Lomu also mixed in at LG1 with Marcus Bryant at RT- Alijah Vera-Tucker repped in competitive drills for the first time this spring- No competitive reps for Kayshon Boutte or Christian Gonzalez- Kevin Byard, Chad Muma, KJ Britt, Khalil Jacobs, and Brandon Crossley had PBUs. Kindle Vildor was also in the area on two incompletions - Kyle Williams made a nice adjustment in the back of the EZ on a ball Tommy DeVito threw behind him and away from the defender- Practice seemed to end early after Bradyn Swinson accidentally ran into Maye

The problem is it is a bad idea to pay 2 #2 WRs. They paid Doubs in the hope he is their #2 to 4 years... They can get out okay in 2 though. If you pay 2 #2s it eats into so do much cash for a very modest return. Same issue with paying 2 #2 CBs. With the #1 at both positions you just find yourself paying a lot to get smoked by the really talented teams who can exploit excessive middling talent.
I think you’re making too much of that. Doubs is 31, and there is an easy out for the team after 2027 season when he will be 33. Boutte is 24 now, and the Patriots don’t have to give him a new contract until after this season. Doubs is the WR #2 of the present, Boutte is the #2 WR of the future. Team won’t be paying two #2 WRs as you fear for more than one season, which will be a reasonable price for sustained excellence now and across the transition.

Doubs is 26.

Yeah, the Doubs contract makes it difficult. Assuming Hollins is gone after this year, there’s room but the money is the hold up. Of course you CAN do it but you probably end up having to pinch pennies somewhere else to make it happen.

That said, there might be some incentive culturally to rewarding guys who developed in NE and say the right things instead of always paying to bring in outside talent.
Doubs is a 31 year old rental for two seasons. Not a strategic long term factor.
