Now that the AJB saga has played out, time to obsess about resigning/trading Gonzo. The AJB thread turned into a thread about Gonzo so let's give it the space it deserves.

I get the sense that Gonzo is shooting for the moon. I don't think he should be signed at all costs. The Pats are going to have to draw a line in the sand at some point.

Must have signing.

I envision that Gonzo will be the NFLs highest paid CB when its all said and done. Dude erased JSN in the SB - 4 receptions for 27 yards 0 TDs and the Pats D held Seattle to 12 points through 6 minutes into Quarter 3.

Gonzo was always going to be the last to sign. They had to get everyone else onboard and clear up all the extensions or reworking they were going to do to fit him in.

Bedard sounded convinced Kraft isn’t willing to pay Gonzo.

The issue with Bedard is if you've listened to him over the years it's pretty clear he knows plenty about the Patriots but barely watches the rest of the league.

He doesn't seem to have any idea how good Christian Gonzalez is compared to his peers at the CB which is one of the 3/4 best in football and it's not really in question.

He's only about to turn 24 i think it sends a bad message if you pick a guy in the 1st round he makes an all pro team and has pretty much been a top 10 corner since the day he arrived in the league and you won't pay him but you'll pay 29 year old AJ Brown who shot his way out of town.

Even if you get 2 first round picks the chances that one of them is as good as Christian Gonzalez has to be less than 20% even that is generous, you're trading a franchise cornerstone for 2 lottery tickets because you're cheap.

Krafts need to stop living in the world they can cheap out and where Brady can fix everything, having a player that good he needs paid top of the market isn't a bad thing it's exactly what you pray happens the night you draft them.

5 positions in football need to be paid when you have a top 3 player.

QB, CB, WR, DE and LT.

If you want to be cheap, be cheap with players at all other positions.

Phil Perry wonders if Gonzo is looking for transformational money at the CB position. Not just a few more mil than the current top CB. With Houston paying Will Anderson 50 million (wich I think is absurd) and JSN getting 40 million.

Is he that much of a difference maker if he's asking for 40? Would he alone be worth it rather than say 2 CBs each earning 20 mil? Or that 40 mil spread around the defense how ever you slice it?

If we could get two first round draft picks for him or something close to that I think I'd go that route.

I had posted same a few weeks ago
I think the Pats have no issue taking Gonzo to the top tier of pay at the CB market. but does Gonzo want top tier of the defensive player market?
honestly, I still don't understand the cheap conversation. I believe RK/JK are kept in the loop, but do not make financial decisions, even to that magnitude. they leave that to the football/financial decision makers. I truly believe RK doesn't care if Gonzo gets $40m or $50m.
surely he has a budget, and is more than likely willing to cross over it. but the decisions within budget are not made by him

If Gonzalez wants top 3 CB money then pay him. If he wants Will Anderson money play the season out then trade him

Do you think Gonzo is worth less to a predominantly zone coverage team or do you think coverage scheme makes no difference?

You do know the Patriots played man the 9th most in the entire league despite being predominantly zone coverage, there wasn't a single team in the league who played more man than zone last year so Gonzalez isn't worth having?

The Patriots played man 28.1% of the time only the Browns played it more than 32.1%, this is where the argument falls down 28.1% is a very high percentage of man coverage in the NFL now.

Almost half the league is under 20% man coverage.

I don't think anyone would argue against this. Gonzo should get top CB1 money and reset the market at CB. The question is whether he wants top defensive player in the league kind of money, which may be tough to work out.

IF he wasn't so young I would say Trade him for a haul. But Gonzo's in the Elite CB's ball park with Sauce and Stingley Jr.

Bedard is an utter moron and continues to show he's an utter moron and has no source at Gillette

Bedard also thinks his play in the SB is one of the most overrated performances ever. Basically shut down the OPOY but apparently it was overrated
