DRAFT Welcome to New England - Wake Forest CB Karon Prunty (5th round, #171)

Been researching Prunty a bit, not sure why he ranked so low.
Negatives:
-will be 25 in December.
-Only 192 pounds, light for his weight
-bench press was weak, so strength a question.
-Weak vertical

Positives:
-Top level 3-cone drill, probably one of the best drills to measure corners, especially for agility and hip fluidity
-Second best drill for CB success is 10 yd split, was above average there
-Elite level ball skills
-Above average arm length for a CB
-Steadily improved each year
-PFF rated him 84.8 in coverage, among the best in the nation

He's an outside only corner but also has data that suggests he could also play safety.
This is so much like the panned Craig Woodson pick. Woodson was a higher rated prospect but considered a reach.
Others may say more like the Kobee MInor pick, but Minor had way worse analytics.

His lack strength and weak vertical stand out as negatives but he has a ton of positives. Can't figure out why he was considered such a low prospect. Doesn't make sense.

Historically only about 3 of the guys drafted in the 5th round are making much impact for the team that drafted him. Odds are low in the 5th round anyway, but I don't see any reason he wasn't worth that round.

Prunty's 11 reps was about average for this years CB class.

Though Prunty only had a 33in vertical, he had an 10'03' Broad Jump. Aveion Terrell had similar numbers with a 34in vertical and 10'03 broad. Igbinosun had a 34in VJ at the combine and 35in at his Pro Day. His broad was 10'0 and 10'04. Devin Moore was 34.5" and 10'1. So, the numbers don't tell the whole story..

Which ****ing brain-dead, lemming PatsFag gave this post - and therefore the pick itself - a ****ing "Winner'?!?

Whoever did is a f-f-****ing m-m-moron, because this player is ****ing rancid, less-than-****ing-useless GARBAGE, who shouldn't have been drafted IN ANY ****ING ROUND. **** him AND **** the ****ing incompetent ****ing NepoTard who drafted him.

LOL, that was Ian - you know, the guy who owns and runs this website?

Hopefully the team have seen something they can unlock.

If Prunty is more than two notches from what we have after Marcus Jones he's alright in my book. IF Gonzo or Davis misses time we need a Backup CB who can Start: not another Alex Austin.

We have Woods as our #4 CB.

Is Prunty as good as Dial and Vildor, those competing for CB5? I have Prunty making the team as #6 CB but only because he was drafted,

We get it. You don't like the pick. You don't have to be so Prunty about it...

I think I mentioned some of this in the other (main-Manxman) UDFA thread.....

I thought it strange that he included a DPI play (@1:40 to 2:02 of video) in his self-promotion video (see link below to @manxman2601 post of video). I know he-himself was signaling OPI, but that almost never gets called the D guy´s way, even if true. He only has like 10 plays in there and the first one he is playing huge off the wr - allowing the reception and this 5th or so one is a DPI. = 20% of the content isnt really all that favorable. ... So, I wasnt terribly impressed on draft day as a result of seeing this video & those 2 plays in particular. He had a couple good breakups, but the video seemed a little total content light as well as partially not so positive.

But since then his measureables and other stats from earlier team-years that folks posted have grown on me a little. He still seems like a really strange outside the box pick that really, really smells of the position coach trying to do an old friend a favor and pushing the pick/putting his finger on the weight scale.
.
But as a couple others (@imahobgoblin particularly) have said, AT END OF DAY HE´s A 5 ROUNDER. Its a round for speculative chances. So what the heck.

5th rounders have an 8.9% change of getting a longterm contract, but some dingbats act as is they are 1st to 2nd rounders. Was it Sam who had the tantrum saying the Prunty pick was just like BB?
Chad Jackson (2006, 36th overall).
Ras-I Dowling (2011, 33rd overall).
Duke Dawson (2018, 56th overall).
Ron Brace (2009, 40th overall).

Prunty is nothing like these picks. He is a longterm target of Justin Hamilton, our cornerbacks coach. So Hamilton went out on a limb and said, "I want this guy" and so they picked him in round 5. This is not a crime or anything similar to the others I just listed. I just don't understand this idiocy of "reaching" in round 5. Its total ignorance, especially in this draft. Those same people who hate the BB picks then turn around and point to Brady and Edelman as proof lightening stikes in later rounds, which it does but its not predictable. Well do you love BB or hate him? I just think the level of NE fans is just flooded with miserable human beings who have to complain about everything. Many are not satisfied unless they are complaining.

Is Woods really so good he’s the presumptive top backup even before training camp? At a quick glance I’m not seeing anything distinguishing him from Vildor.

Perhaps we shouldn't consider that he has played for us for a year and has been OK when he took reps.

There is plenty of room for Woods AND Vildor AND Prunty.

But, yes, for me, the incumbent who has played OK has a presumptive roster spot. Woods came in, worked with the team, learned the system, beat out Austin, and went on to be out #4 CB.

The last time we used this logic and ignored film and ratings, we draft Polk.

Being a position coach's favorite doesn't mean that he is even an NFL quality player. That is why there are such extensive analysis of players.

That being said, we are talking about the #6 WR position. And doing a solid for one of your coaches is a good thing.
==============
Perhaps it also a good thing to bring in the QB's buddy for high-school QB camp to be our #3 QB.

But it has also worked too. Belichick and Greg Schiano were close resulting in Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon, and Logan Ryan. We can dig up a bunch just like this.

Of course, it occasionally works to draft players rounds and from hundreds of places down on the consensus list. (I think that Prunty was higher than 300 on some lists (512 on one I think).

Fo example, it might have "worked" for Jacas to be picked in the top 10 since he is very likely to be a good player. That does NOT make such a strategy a reasonable one.
============
That being said, this is different from Belichick's strategy of making such reaches in the 2nd and 3rd round.

Taking a wild shot on a 5th who historically may not even make the roster is a much different situation. As I have said, I would have preferred Crownover or a NT in the 5th. But it is not a huge deal for me if they allow a coach to take a shot in the dark in the 5th.

Can he play safety?? Thought that was a bigger need...
Hope he is a kickass sleeper...
I dunno, Woodson and Byard seems pretty settled at safety to me.

Hopefully the team have seen something they can unlock.

All this kid did was get better at ever level he played at.
I watch way too much ACC football.
This guy played on some dogshit defenses in front of him.

He needs to add weight and strength, to me that's really his only drawback, he's a good cover guy.
