For me, extending this solid 28-year old starter for 3 years can be part of the OL solution.

We then have a solid starter for the next 3-4 years.
We save more than $10M on the 2026 cap.
This could, for example, pay for our backup LT and another player to compete (perhaps Munford).

SUMMARIZING
no extra cap money
3-4 yr starter at RG
3 yr backup at LT
camp competition at OT

I would draft our future starting RT
=========
We would need to spend cap money on an LG, but that was always the case, for a veteran starter or backup.

Yeah people love to rag on him, but he’s a good player.

He's not worth the current cap amount, but he is a guy you want to rewrite.

Remember Onwenu was paid because they thought he was flipping to tackle.

Does that matter anymore?

Tough one for me. He’s going into his age 29 season so any extension would cover age 30 season and beyond. I haven’t always trusted his conditioning and that doesn’t always age well. Also, for as solid a player he is, he is very immobile which does limit some things they can do schematically.

However, our other 2 interior OL spots are weak so we already need to improve there. He’s our best overall OL too. And the cap number is kind of egregiously high to where you probably have to do something, either an extension or void years. I don’t really want to get too aggressive pushing money into future years for guys I’m not convinced I want long term either, but he might be a case where you just do an extension and deal with it later if you have to move on.

No on the extension as it's only enabling players undeserving of big contracts. He had no business getting the first deal and would've been playing for the Pats on a cheaper deal had they not handed him money for no real reason.

What does that (which really isn’t true any way because he got the market) have to do with the future?
You want to hurt your team because you don’t want to “enable”? Enable what?

I tend to look at the last year of a contract and it's associated contract as one almost intended to be extended if the player is still solid.

Everything's backloaded and sometimes that results in an outright cut with the dead money, sometimes the contract is reasonable enough to let play out, and sometimes the contract ratio to play indicates the player should be extended.

Even at his current salary I haven't heard too many complain about his play on the OL

It's an easy choice to extend and have him trade guaranteed money for a lower cap hit now and over time.

As the OP said, extend him, draft the future RT who can maybe be a backup LT or LG too, and you've got the makings of a solid line for years to come.

My only additional wish list would be to use our FA dollars to draft a pro-bowl Center of the present and future to anchor the line.

But to me, this is a no brainer and this year's OL moves will allow them to grow as a unit for the next 3-5 years to the point we won't worry about OL at all and will be directing FA and draft resources to other positions.

Enable players.

Pinching pennies to protect Bob’s bankroll is more important.

Only way I do it is if there is very strong language in it relating to body fat % …which is a better metric than “weight”.

Edit: Candidly this is also what’s best for Onwenu the human. Carrying that much fat while being an NFL player, with that level of activity does not bode well for retirement

I was mixing him with up with Barmore who I wouldn't have re-signed early. That was absolutely pointless and completely backfired.

However, I would've sent Owenu to test the market and let him walk on that contract. BB would've done the exact same thing.

I don’t even understand what that means. How does signing a good player to an extension “enable players”?

Barmore was a big reason we got to the SB. He is an excellent player. Extending him surely wasn’t a mistake.

Why would you let a good player walk rather than paying them
Market value? We need good players and they are hard to get

Stop it. You are repeating untrue crap like usual. He had the most consistent season of his career this year, and played 99% of offensive snaps. There was no conditioning or effort problems. He was 344 and the Combine in 2020 and played at 350 this season.

Onwenu has always had a weight clause in his contract. You just want to replace the clause with a body fat clause.

I suppose that Onwenu's agent might agree wo this if others in the league are changing this type of clause in a similar manner.

The weight clause does not seem to be working. Dude is flat out obese.

And 25-30 lbs less fat would increase his agility and preserve his career and his life.

Weight clause has never made sense to me in an era of Dexa scans.

Body comp does.

.
Utter nonsense

If the team thought that he was out of shape, he would be long gone. If the team believes that he can't perform, he will be gone. The team would NOT change its mind because he met some body fat limit.

The idea that Onwenu has been grossly overweight and out of shape is just the invention of posters.

I think Owenu is a top 8 OG for sure and I think they rework his contract to save cap money, but I admit that I would prefer a more mobile guy at RG for more screens and I think there was probably a correlation between Mike and roll outs to the right.

I may not be remembering correctly but it felt like as the season went on the roll outs decreased
