I don't think he forgot how to play QB, I think he was told to protect the ball, had between 1.5-2 seconds to pick a receiver, and none were coming open that quickly so he held the ball or threw it where only the receiver would have a shot at the ball, often missing to that area. But I agree with the argument that they didn't have a plan. I thought that was MacDaniels worst game this season. I was puzzled throughout the game by the strategy and play calling. I was hoping they would go no huddle for the rest of the game when they came back after the half, They needed to get that defense on its heels and never did.

It's definitely puzzling. I thought McDaniels did a pretty good job all year but then he laid a stinker in the biggest game. I'm left wondering if he felt he could not get overly complex due to Drake's bad shoulder. Who knows.

Rewatching, and to me, as a completely untrained medical professional, but Drake's shoulder was...bad. His passes were floaty and off-target all game. He REALLY had to step into passes, which takes longer and telegraphs the throw to the defense.

The OC always looks bad when the team cannot execute. The replay of Maye landing on his shoulder with Vrabel helping him up tells the story on why the day went to crap. Maye's inability to hit open receivers basically short circuited JMD's game plan. With a few successful completions early on the defense would have had to adjust instead they were able to focus on getting to the QB without fear. Under the best of circumstances getting hit as often as Maye did will rattle any QB, throw in the injury and he and the offense had no chance against a very good defense that was playing its best. To me this is more an indication of how many things need to go well to win the super bowl as opposed to fundamental issues with the QB and OC. That said the game highlighted clear needs on the OL that need to be addressed via getting healthy and upgrades where possible.

For me, the most surprising thing was the apparent lack of a plan (or needed adjustments) to Seattle blitzing more frequently or creating slightly different pressure packages. In the film studies I've watched, you consistently don't see the protections properly executed nor a hot receiver in the right area. To me, that's more on the coaching.

A few of the worst looking passes were the receivers fault, not sitting down, taking too long to get to a spot, etc. So Maye had 2 bad turnovers and missed a couple of easy throws, the receivers missed a few, Josh missed a few, and the refs missed a few. That’s all it took in this game or we would have been right in it. Even focusing on only the pick 6 play, if Drake had a split second more, I think it would’ve been a TD to Boutte down the right sideline to make it 19-14.

Early in the we season Drake threw a block downfield and it was suggested that it was risky to do that. Drake’s response was essentially that he was a pretty big guy and it wasn’t that easy to hurt him.

You all remember Earl Campbell and how physically dominating he was his first couple of years in the league.

Earl ran a straight line from point A to point B no matter who he had to go through, but eventually, it took it’s toll even on big tough Earl.

This isn’t college football and Drake needs to protect his body better.

The offense was dysfunctional most of the game, but a few breaks and we could have threatened late. The refs missed 3 obvious calls I can think of that cost us possessions, including the offsides on the punt, the hit out of bounds, and a missed PI on Hollins. Gonzo couldn’t haul in the goal line INT that gave them 3 points and cost us a 6-0 halftime score. Drake’s fumble on the scramble was unlucky and gave them 7 points. Should have been 9-0 in the 4th quarter.

All year the offense thrived on chunk plays. I said all week this offense, w a 23 yr old QB in his first tournament and an offense without true game breakers, Maye was going to HAVE to take chances and throw into tight areas. Collinsworth said the EXACT same thing.
If anyone doesn't think mcdaniels told Maye the exact OPPOSITE you're a ****ing moron. All playoffs everything was super conservative and it showed in the lack of production. They rarely challenged the middle of the field 15-25 yards downfield. They were not going to Mount 10-12 play scoring drives on Seattle.
They needed to THROW on first down. And what does ****ing mcdaniels do? 4/5 drive starters were runs.
The entire game plan screamed ****ing Bill the Bozo....play conservative, close to the vest, don't take chances, and wait for the other team to turn it over...hope to get the ball at the other teams 30. If you're going to lose, go down swinging. Mcdaniels, once again, did exactly what I said he would do....he didn't start throwing downfield until they were down 2 scores .
This game was winnable. The outcome is on Mcdaniels

Turns out he suffered a first-degree shoulder separation to his NON-throwing shoulder first game in December, before injuring it further in the season finale against the Miami Dolphins and turning it into a second-degree shoulder separation.

Look at his December completion pcts.... 55, 48, 51, 56. And that wasn't his right shoulder. Just saying. Playing in pain is playing in pain.

ya, you can see how it was tempting. That strategy worked against the previous three opponents. The key unknown is how bad Drake's shoulder way. By the way he was throwing, its seems like it was pretty bad.

I looked back recently and didn't realize how difficult their schedule really was in 2002. He and the team played 13 out of 16 teams that had a least a .500 record. In fact, almost the half the schedule were playoff teams including two that made the AFCCG and Super Bowl. The defense was bad and the offense was not built for shootouts. Without Brady, they aren't winning anything close to 9 games in 2002.
