If you want to give Stafford the offensive player of the year because he puts up big passing numbers (despite throwing the ball significantly more than Maye) then by all means go right ahead. There are plenty of guys who have won OPOY who didn’t win MVP that season. But the fact is nobody in the history of the AP NFL MVP award has won it while their team finished 3rd in their own division. Yes it is a tough division as the Seahawks and 49ers are two of the best teams in the NFL currently, but you’d think as the MVP of an elite offense backed by a strong defense that you’d find a way to have your team at the top. Funny what happens when the guy responsible for 33% of your passing TDs (Davante Adams) is missing from the lineup… you lose both games and go from the driver’s seat of the 1 seed down to the 6 seed. That doesn’t sound like an MVP to me. It’s Maye’s award to lose at this point.
