What should this spectacular play be called?

I said this in the GDT but I wonder if the holder bobbling the snap caused the kicker to hesitate. He might have anticipated the ball being fumbled and didn't think he'd get a chance to kick it and purposely stopped his kick in the ground. Curious to hear what he says about it

so... should we add "Laces out Jamie Gillan!!!" to the poll?

Yeah, but even if that did happen... like... oh well? What are you gonna do about it as the kicker? Just finish your swing and then worry about it. If the holder bobbles the hold, he's gonna pick it back up, scramble and do what he can. That's why holders are often QBs.

The team is supposed to practice for that situation, and I highly doubt that the plan includes "if you see the holder bobble the snap, jam your ****ing foot into the dirt and scream into the sky"

I have never kicked a field goal in my life but I know my reaction would not be to kick at full power at the area of the ball/someone's hand. I know my instinct would be to stop the swing and idk try to make some kinda football play afterwards

But again

Not an NFL kicker. Just an average dude

That’s exactly what he said happened, that he pulled up intentionally.

“I was approaching the ball and, cold weather, the ball kind of slipped out at the bottom so it was moving,” Koo said, via the New York Post. “I wasn’t able to kick through the ball. The ball was moving when I was driving to it, so I just pulled up on it.”

His explanation of it only makes it worse. Keep kicking. Better to shank it. If you don't you're likely to lose yards and get sacked or turn it over for a TD.

Yeah that makes sense. I get that the snapshot of the play shows the ball being in a good position to kick but we're talking milliseconds of reaction time messing with his kick process. The timing almost needs to be perfect or at least any blunders need to be corrected in time for the guy to react to it.

That being said

F the Giants

I vote for "The NY Toe Job"

I don't think he thought it  would get into a position to shank though. I think he thought it was slipping out. I think his decision to stop the kick was made at the bobble not at the recovery. i mean if that ball is on the ground and the holder is struggling to get a hold of it do you wanna kick in the general area of his hands/ball and cause an injury or something? I think it's a matter of "OK we effed up the kick, just cover it up and take the loss and don't make it worse" thing

Fair. But I would think as a kicker you probably have to operate on faith that your holder is going to have it in the right spot even if he bobbles it at the start.

Isn't that one already taken?

We all know teh answer.

True, but he gets credited with a missed kick... and as a guy who has been cut and shuffled around the league maybe he didn't want the heat.

It was the holder's fault, he didn't get the ball down and laces out in time. There's a better angle on the broadcast, you can see him bobble it and lay the ball on it's side before finally getting it up... and it still wasn't straight up, it was tilted when Koo arrived.

Given the kicker’s name, and our owner’s affinity for Asian spas, it has to be known as The Happy Ending.

Exactly. You have to trust that your holder will either:
A) Recover the hold and get the ball in a good enough position for you to kick it, even if it becomes a shank
B) Abort the hold entirely and pull it out of your kick path, letting you swing your kick leg freely while he scrambles out

I don't know why a kicker would think his holder would just kinda awkwardly go "ahhh geeeeeez oh nooo the ball goshhh" and just be a big mess and get kicked in the hands
