Daniels: Vederian Lowe played much of 2024 with torn labrum

I'm only going to exert so much effort defending Vederian Lowe because after all... it's still Vederian Lowe. But I do think he was overly maligned last year. I think one could argue, depending on how you evaluated Onwenu who I don't think played well last year, that he was the best OL on the team last year. We're talking about a backup caliber player you ask to play the hardest OL position as the best blocker on the team with an OC who didn't have good schemes? Yikes. Very unfair set of circumstances.

I think Lowe is about as good as any of us can realistically expect to have as a backup OT signed as a vet. Any better than Lowe and one of the desperate teams would pay that player too much to keep as a backup. Only way you end up with a materially better backup OT than Lowe IMO is if you drafted one who just way outplays their draft position or one of those situations where you drafted a guy somewhat highly and he's either waiting behind a vet for a year or some random just came out of nowhere to beat him out even though he isn't a bust.

Being unable to use your shoulder to push anyone sounds like a big deal. Especially in the run game.

Has anyone reviewed how he did against the Bengals?

I assume there's a reason this is coming out now and I don't care it still makes me feel better to know there was some sort of excuse for last year. Now don't get hurt again we need you.

I wanted to keep him here this year just for this reason ... we can always look for better depth next year, but had more pressing needs to address this past off season...

I think Lowe played well when Campbell went down. Didn't watch him on every play, but I did quite a few and he was solid.

I also think he was set up for failure last year. The coaching was so bad and coaching and play calling and design are important to line play. It is a vastly underrated part of line play. That is why the combo of McDaniels and Scar could get the o-line to be solid even when they had a lot of JAGs on the line.

I think Lowe will end up doing a much better job than many here expect. He is definitely a downgrade, but he probably will be adequate at LT while Campbell is on IR.

Well at least over the next four games or so he will receiver better coaching than what he got last year. I also think the play design/calling will also try to compensate for the current situation of the left side of the line. I dont expect him to fill Campbell's shoes but I certainly do expect better play than what we saw last year.

Suppose i gotta/gonna catch the VD fever and cheer him on for the next 4-6 weeks...

My Dude, fever or no I hope you don't catch the VD of any kind. Please brother you just protect that Johnson no matter how magic you think it is

I don’t remember watching him on run plays, but I did key one him on a couple of pass plays. He looked decent. Not awe inspiring, but didn’t get badly beat in a nanosecond like last year. That said who was the Bengals player rushing from the offensive left side, I don’t remember, maybe Scourton?
Burns moves around the Dline and rushes from both sides, Lowe will face a stiffer test this week.

Tom Brady was a huge factor too. He got rid of it so fast. Maye needs to learnhow to consistently get rid of the ball quickly. Doing so helps the OL.

This is so true.
Our Olines during the Brady years were good, but not great. Brady made them look better than they were with his pre snap reads, and incredibly quick delivery.
That said, WRs need to get open quick for it all to work.
That’s one thing I noticed Sunday with Flacco, he was getting rid of the ball extremely fast.

Fans want players to be awesome, understandable, but a guy who wears the team shirt and Coaches put him on the field, I will root for. It is not an easy process to get there, so I wish him and others in that point of their lives the best.
Most likely, a better spot than the "people " who disparage them.
